The Land Below the Waves: Tiree Ultramarathon

The Isle of Tiree: 11 miles long, 6 miles wide. Famed for it's white sandy beaches, blue skies, unspoilt landscape, and no midges! Tiree's coastline is rugged, beautifully carved, and adorned with long stretches of firm sandy beach. The complete circumference takes in 35 miles of the finest Hebridean scenery. And that is the Tiree Ultramarathon - The Land Below the Waves.

What you need to know:

  • It's a 35 mile run around the whole island
  • You'll be following a series of checkpoints with simple navigation in between
  • Route arrows and our amazing team of marshals will guide your progress
  • Cut off time is 10hrs
  • Event date is Sunday 6th September 2020
  • Start time 8am
  • Entry fee includes goodie bag, laminated course map, medal, tech t-shirt and VIP tickets to the evening dance

Thanks everyone who has made this event into something so special. There's finish times from previous years and a gallery on the Tiree Fitness website.

“Superb from start to finish – can’t stop grinning! Love Tiree!”

“Thank you for an amazing weekend, loved it & looking forward to coming back next year!!”

This event is unique; it's made to appeal to your sense of adventure, to take an entire Hebridean coastline, to embrace the community it circumnavigates, and to encourage participation across all levels of ability. Embracing that is our event sponsor Cohesion Medical - specialising in clinical software solutions the company are advocates of social responsibility and grass roots development, and have supported the event from the beginning. We're pleased to have them on board, and you'll see their commitments as they take on the miles themselves as a valued part of the ultramarathon family.

The Course

Essentially you're going to be following the coastline round the entire island. There is a navigation element to this, but it's not there to catch you out. You'll be running across firm sandy beaches, along gravel tracks, grassy dunes, sheep tracks, a few bogs and some rocky outcrops. There's a few hills but nothing serious. It's a really enjoyable course. Varied and incredibly scenic. Maps and profiles can be found on the Tiree Fitness website.

As well as the checkpoints there will be several feed stations around the course and friendly marshals to encourage you along the way. At the finish you'll be given a goodie bag, medal and the chance to refuel before the evenings entertainment and prize giving.

Getting to Tiree

You can travel on ferry from Oban or plane from Glasgow. It's a weekend trip so you'll need to come over on Saturday, race on Sunday, ceilidh on sunday evening and return home on Monday. It's worth it for a weekend trip though, and a great excuse to come and visit Tiree.

Whilst on Tiree your best option for getting about is bike hire - http://www.tireefitness.co.uk/bike-hire/. Alternatively there's a Ring n Ride bus service - details on the community website.

UPDATE ON 2020 EVENT

Hi everyone

Here's the promised update on Tiree Ultra 2020 - this has been emailed to all current entries.

The Tiree Ultramarathon this year will unfortunately not be happening. This isn't the outcome I'd hoped for, but there really is no other option. I know this is a disappointment, and having had most of the event season written off already, many of you were looking forward to at least being able to get to Tiree for a late season run. I've looked at various ways we could put together an amended event, but it's become increasingly clear that there are so many factors to which we couldn't guarantee a solution; from accommodation provision, transport, medical cover, safe marshalling, distancing, access to land....... together with the added challenges of being on a small island with a capable but limited health care service and a vulnerable population - there's just not a solution in there that would be at all responsible. I know you all understand and appreciate these things already, so this decision is likely no surprise. All I can say is sorry, I'm sad that we'll not be seeing you this year, but I really hope to see you all back on the start line next year.

So, what will happen now is that all current entries will automatically be rolled over to next year, with the event date being Sunday 5th September 2021. If you can't make that date or you no longer want to be on the start list, drop me an email and I'll refund your entry fee. I'll do everything that I can to make 2021 super special, plus you get an extra year to prepare, so perhaps that's welcome news for some.

So keep on running, remember all the great reasons we love this sport, and be encouraged by the fantastic community that has emerged from these events and been strengthened through these times. Next year will come around soon enough, and the startline countdown on the beach will begin. We hope to see you there. Happy running everyone.
