The Dramathon

Organiser's Description

The Dramathon - The Speyside Single Malt Marathon

Saturday 16th October 2021

2020 EVENT POSTPONED TO 16 OCTOBER 2021

10 July 2020 :
We've been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely in the hopes that we would be able to make The Dramathon 2020 happen. However, it's become clear that it's going to be impossible for us to deliver a quality event with more than 1500 runners in October in a rural community.

We don't want to deliver a substandard event, and we're all about the full-on complete Dramathon experience (which is why we've decided that a 'virtual' alternative isn't right for us). With unknown challenges ahead, we want to give our competitors, sponsors, suppliers and volunteers confirmation of postponement as early as possible. And so sadly we have to postpone The Dramathon to the 16th October 2021.

We’re not a huge outfit, we’re a team of 3 who love running and whisky. We appreciate your support at this difficult time and we want to ensure we can deliver The Dramathon for years to come. We hope that you are able to stick with us and we look forward to seeing you in 2021 for a celebration of all things running and whisky.

What does this mean for 2020 competitors?

All entries for The Dramathon 2020 will be automatically rolled over to our 2021 event on the 16th October. This covers Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and Relay marathon team entries. You don't need to do a thing.

If you can’t make our 2021 date and would like a refund, please email info@thedramathon.com quoting your run distance (marathon, half marathon, 10K, relay team), by the Saturday 17th October 2020 and we will refund you 100% of entry fee less Entry Central transaction fee. Please please please state your run distance in your email as it will help us process your refund more quickly. From 18th October 2020 our Standard Terms and Conditions will apply to refunds.

Athletes with Booking Protection who defer to 2021 will automatically have their Booking Protect cover roll over with their entry. Athletes who accept the deferral but who consequently cannot make the new date will not be able to claim from Booking Protect. Athletes need to be unable to attend for the reasons insured.

As mentioned, we’re a small team and will be processing everything as quickly as we can, but please give us 10 working days to respond to emails.

The Dramathon is actually four races : The Full Dram (nearly 42km), The Half Dram (nearly 21km), The Wee Dram (just over 10km) and the relay (We Dram).

All are trail races, mostly on well-maintained paths along the beautiful Speyside Way. The route takes in several distilleries along the route, offering sights and smells to ignite your senses. Depending on the distance you run you will pick up the corresponding miniatures of single malt at the end of the race.

The finish line for all the races is at Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown. The full marathon starts at Glenfarclas, the half-marathon starts at Tamdhu, the 10K in Aberlour and the various legs of the relay divide up the marathon route into roughly 4 x 10km.

The course is mostly pretty flat, and largely follows the old railway line of the Speyside Way, but there are a couple of hills in the first half of the full marathon (and legs 1 and 3 of the relay). The final stretch from Craigellachie to Dufftown is a gradual uphill slope. Some short sections on minor roads.

The Spey Valley will be in full spectacular Autumnal bloom on race weekend – come and experience one of the most beautiful and interesting corners of Scotland.

The Dramathon is beautifully structured and well-paced with a great finish. Just like a Speyside malt in fact ...

All times to be confirmed in the athlete briefing document.

NB : Two new ecological measures in 2020:

Relay team enrolment is done by one member of the team. The full amount is paid by this person.

Route sections :

The first section from Glenfarclas to Ballindalloch is probably the toughest with a rough-ish trail path just after Glenfarclas but you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Ben Rinnes before the elegance of the manicured lawns of Ballindalloch Castle and their Estate Distillery.

The second section from Ballindalloch to Tamdhu is mostly plain sailing through the Spey Valley, except for the climb up to Cragganmore Distillery.

The third section from Tamdhu to Aberlour starts with a wee (!) hill up to Cardhu which gives you some fine views. At Carron you will see the award-winning architecture of Dalmunach distillery before finishing in Aberlour for the handover.

The fourth and final section from Aberlour to Craigellachie is a breeze before the grand finale taking you through Balvenie and Glenfiddich to claim your drams and catch your breath before the post-race celebrations.
