Glasgow University Des Gilmore 5 Mile Road Race

The Glasgow University 5 Mile Road Race returns for its 62nd year on Saturday 7th March 2026!

This year, the race has been renamed the Glasgow University Des Gilmore 5 Mile Road Race, in honour of Des Gilmore, who sadly passed away in July 2025.

Des was an integral part of Glasgow Uni Hares & Hounds, first joining the club in 1972, and serving as president from 1988 until his passing. Well known and deeply respected across the club and wider community, Des dedicated countless hours to volunteering- regularly helping at H&H training in addition to serving as official timekeeper at every 5 Mile Road Race for many years. In recognition of his tireless  commitment to the club, it is only fitting that our flagship event now carries his name. Des will be sorely missed, and we hope you will join us in celebrating his legacy by supporting the race he contributed to year after year.

Race Overview:

The race first took place in 1963 and is held on the outskirts of Glasgow. Starting at the Garscube Sports Complex, it follows a 2-lap course around quiet roads, offering a good balance of flat running and some hilly sections. The race start time is 12 pm.

Entries:

• Online entry is open until the 6th of March, subject to demand.
• There may be the opportunity to enter on the day at the Garscube Sports Complex at an increased price of £14. However, OTD entries are not guaranteed, so we recommend entering online in advance.

Race Day Information:

• Registration, number collection, and on-the-day entries will be at Garscube Sports Complex, from 10:00am to 11:15 am.
• Toilet and changing room facilities are available at Garscube.
• Prize-giving will take place immediately after the race inside the Garscube Sports Complex. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Masters Men/Women, Senior Men/Women

• UKA-certified 5 mile (8.05 km) course
• Scottish Athletics licensed event under UK athletics rules
• Results will be available on Power of Ten/runBritain
• Enter online or on the day
