Sandwell Adult Open Water Aquathon 2026 750m/5km
Sandwell Aquathlon 2026
Swan Pool is a large lake which Sandwell Aquatics use regularly for both our Adult and children’s Open Water training. Once away from the shore the lake is very deep and cannot be stood up in. There will be "Safety Crew Swimmers" swimming in the water near the swimmers as well as others in rescue craft, if any swimmers find they need a rest or assistance they will be close by. We take safety very seriously and as such require every competitor to attend a short warm up briefing just before entering the water. The entry exit jetty is a ideal place to acclimatise, splash water over your face. Once the starter says you can get into the water there will only be a short time to reach the start line (15mtr away) before the race begins in order not to leave swimmers treading water for long. Assistance will be given to anyone who needs it. If you are not a particularly strong swimmer, we recommend you start at the side or rear of the pack. Wet suits are not expected to be compulsory (although recommended) unless temperature on the day falls into BTF compulsory ruling, shortie wetsuits are acceptable. Tri-Starts begin from Jetty.
Format for day
Arrive/park in Lake car park at Sandwell Valley. (B71 3SZ) Park Lane/Forge Lane
Register at Registration 1st, field to right of path to lake (only 30mtrs away).
Put running shoes/towel into Transition at your stated time and attend briefing opposite at 10.30am.
Get timing chip fitted and be at lake entry at least 15 minutes before race start time.
Have an enjoyable race
Presentation at finish area soon after everyone has finished and results confirmed.
There are portable toilets, but no changing facilities.

Your Event takes place at approx. 11:00am as the 1st event of the morning: Participants Parent/Guardian register you at Registration (same as everyone else). Sandwell Adult Open Water Swim 2026 400m
Swim Only adults finish at Transition Exit.

Two waves of 15 max.
What happens: The first group (able to put shoes & helmet on) start at lake exit mat and have their feet wetted via a watering can, they run to their transition towel (shoes & helmet), put shoes & Helmet on (must be fastened). Grab scooter then push it for a short distance along the tarmac path to a line on the floor leave it there and run to finish line to collect their medal and certificate. The second group (can't put own shoes on) will do the same but parents help them put these on (parents can help throughout).
Required Equipment: shoes to run in, scooter or 3 wheel small bike, small towel.
How to secure a place: When doing your/child’s entry;
tick box “I will also be entering a child in Scootathon”.
Then enter the Scootathlon entrant/s in same way as for Aquathlon & Open Water Only.
Sandwell Scootathon is a Event that takes place during the Sandwell Aquathlon each year.
The purpose of the Event is to allow children who are siblings or sons/daughters of competitors to also be able to participate at the Event. So, making it an "Event for the whole family".
To make this possible, the Scootathon is Run as a "Training Event", with everyone being a winner.
For insurance reasons all participants in this training session must become members of Sandwell Aquatics for the day.
Your Event takes place at approx. 11:00am as the 1st event of the morning: Participants Parent/Guardian register you at Registration (same as everyone else). This is where you receive your race number & pins to fix it to your clothing (upper body ie. front of T-shirt). Then optional is to have your arm/leg marking to make you feel part of the event.

Q&A.
- is the minimum age set in stone? No! we have had children as young as 18 months old participate, its all about being practical and as such we say "is the child physically & mentally mature enough to participate, expected to enjoy the experience, not going to spoil it for others, or get hurt". if so we will consider the child participating.
- is the maximum age set in stone? almost! Fairness, physical size compared to others all becomes an issue. if age is 8yrs talk to us and we will consider the child's individual circumstances.
- can a child enter who hasn't a sibling/parent participating in the main event? yes, but there is a priority order. We give priority to those that do have. Next priority goes to Sandwell Aquatic siblings/children of Sandwell Aquatics members, then friends of entrants, then finally to the public. We try not to turn anyone away!
- can you enter on the day? only if someone pulls out/doesn't turn up. Only then if they fill in the relevant paper application. These will be in the possession of the Event Race Director (Mark), on Event day. He has final say!
