MERRICK HILL RACE
SUNDAY 17th SEPTEMBER 2023 AT 12 NOON
The route is 8 miles, 2,900ft of climb.
The Merrick is located in the Galloway forest region in the southwest of Scotland.
It is embedded in the Awful Hand range on the western edge of the Galloway Hills.
At a height of 2,765ft it is the highest mountain in Scotland south of Ben Lomond.
The race starts and finishes at Bruce’s Stone, Glentrool. Access is from the A714 road, 10 miles north of Newton Stewart. Turn off at Bargrennan to Glentrool village and then follow the road signs to Bruce’s Stone.
The route climbs the Fell of Eschoncan, and then on to the Bennan Hill, Benyellary and finally to the Merrick summit. Return by the same route, 4 miles each way.

The event has a Scottish Athletics (SAL) permit and is organised by Girvan Harriers. The race is bound by SAL and Scottish Hill Runners' rules. Minimum age is 18. All hill race competitors have a prime responsibility for their own safety. You must judge as to whether you are able and equipped to take part. This is a risk sport.
All runners taking part are required to carry with them a map, compass, whistle and full body cover. Every runner is checked before the start and any not complying will not be allowed to start.
