The Trifarm Trailathlon
07 Oct 17
After a small test event in that turned out to be lots of fun, we thought we'd give it another go in 2017. 600m lake swim, 14km bike and 5km run.
We will also include an Aquabike and Aquathlon alongside the main event. Further details to follow.
Overview: Being held at the lovely Trifarm, Church Rd, Boreham, CM3 3DS. Race starts at 2pm, so no early morning alarms!
Important: The bike course is approximately 30% off road. Please save your pride and joy TT & expensive race bikes for another day! CycloX, MTB, road bikes, commuters, hybreds with decent treaded tyres and even the a BMX will do. No fixed gears though as it's against the rules. A spot prize for most unusal choice of machinery will be decided by our panel of non-experts! Trail running shoes and trainers with decent tread are also recommended (but not spikes.)
Parking: Plenty of parking on site. DO NOT PARK ON CHURCH ROAD.
Registration: Will be held by the venue gate from 12:30. Race briefing at 13.45. Race start 1400hrs.
Race numbers: On bike, helmet and any bags you bring. Also to be displayed on your back on the bike and front on the run. Manually timed, so if we can't see your number.......
Swim: As this is a small fun event, we will be setting swimers off individuly in numerical order at 1 minute intervals. So you'll have no problems with crowding. Slowest estimated swim times go first. The start is over at the usual swim place; you'll spot it. Please keep off the run path as bikes will be using it.
Swim clockwise for 3/4 of a lap, keeping the turn buoys on your right. Be careful on the exit as it is up onto slippery uneven surface. If in difficulties, please roll onto your back and raise a hand for assistance. Wetsuits are likely to be optional.
T1. Our events T-shirts and your bike helmets to be put on before moving your bike, then the usual rules apply.
Bike: Exit onto the run track and complete a loop of the lake around to the gate / Church rd. http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/1113280465
Foot down. Turn left onto the road when safe to do so. Over the bridge and head along to Grace's Lane bridleway. Turn left onto it and head STRAIGHT all the way to the top towards the houses and gravel. (People live here, so be quiet and show courtesy) Go through the gate and turn left onto NEW LODGE CHASE. This is a narrow downhill stretch so take care. Left onto HURRELLS LANE. Again downhill towards the ford crossing! At the end of the Lane it's a footdown, collect a band from the marshal and then turning left onto Church Road to start lap two when safe to do so. At the end of loop two collect a 2nd band and then turn right and head back to the Trifarm. Do lap in reverse direction around the lake and enter T2.
Drafting isn't going to be an issue, but please ride sensibly.
T2: Dismount by the entry gates and enter transition. Rack bike before unclipping/removing your race hat.
Run: Amended slightly for 2017. http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/1113296908
Loop around the the lake (as you did on the bike) turning onto a public footpath that goes uphill past the farm buildings. When you get to the large barns turn right and back onto the 2016 course. We will mark key points with coloured tape / marker paint and distance markers. Turn right onto NORTH HILL, keeping to the right again and looking out for cars (cones there to help protect you). Join the public footpath and go through the wooden gates. This goes past the cafe on the lock (stopping for tea and cake is optional!). Follow the tow path all the way along to Church Road. Turn right and head back into the Trifarm and cross the finish line.
FOOD!!!! The plan is to have an end of season BBQ along with a range of other food and drinks. (Marshals...we will be paying your food bill!)
We are kindly being Sponsored by Essex & Suffolk Water, Roundtower Brewery & https://www.facebook.com/athlonsporttristore/?fref=ts (The Cycle Unit) and fuelled by 32Gi.
Please take a copy of your entry confirmation email with you to athlonsport in Chelmsford to get a discount off of RRP. The staff at the store will be able to help with anything bike related as well as filling you with cake and coffee!
Results and Prizes: Once we have collated all the results (which is time consuming, but we will endeavour to get them ready ASAP)
This is a fun event rather than a competition. You'll all get a finishers medal. However, we will be giving spot prizes out for fastest swim and fastest run (inc T2) and fastest overall top three male and female competitors. We want you to be sensible out on the bike course and enjoy it rather than race it, so will be giving a prize for the most unusual / coolest bike in the event (chosen by our panel!)
