Organiser's Description

Run Like A Cateran!

Follow the old drove roads and ancient tracks used by the Caterans – the fearsome cattle thieves who raided Strathardle, Glenshee and Glen Isla from the Middle Ages to the 17th century and for whom the Trail is named.

It's a circular route, starting and finishing next to Gulabin Lodge and approximately 90% off road - made up of forest tracks, rough tracks, bog, mud, heather and beautiful scenery in a spectacular rural setting. There's roughly 10%  tarmac which is mainly backroads where you might be (un)lucky to see a vehicle or two. The last few miles are a treat, a 1000 foot climb over the An Lairig pass with a steep tough run down to The Spittal of Glenshee, across a wee bridge then into the field to the finish!

(Raiding of sheep or cattle is not permitted!)

Race starts at 7.00am, Saturday 25th May 2024, and there is a limit of 150 places.

55 miles/90 kilometers and 7450ft/2250m ascent

Rules

Runners have 15 hours to complete the race.

The route will be marked where I think runners may miss a post although if runners are unfamiliar with the route, the map mentioned in the map section on the right is the most accurate. Any deviation from the route may lead to disqualification. A GPX file of the route is available to download from the race website.

Runners must pass through the checkpoints within the stated time limits, and must carry any items that the Race Director states may be needed for their safety.

You must check in & out with the marshall at each Checkpoint.

Any runner leaving Enochdhu after 20:00hrs may be 'paired up' with another.

This is a SAL permitted race under hill race rules, thus no walking sticks/poles or other aids are permitted.

NO PACERS OR BUDDY RUNNERS ALLOWED and no dogs.

The race has a drop bag service at 5 checkpoints and water will be provided at these. Runners are NOT permitted a support crew.

Cut offs are Blairgowrie by 2.30pm (7.5 hours) and Enochdu 8pm (11 hours).

Any runner who in the opinion of any Race Marshall or Medic is regarded as unfit to continue will be withdrawn from the race. THEIR DECISION IS FINAL.

You will be running unsupported so please be sensible and carry the basic essentials! Yes I know you are a hardcore ultra runner but 55 miles is a long way and the weather may change. The last section is the most remote and the toughest bit. If you are close to the cut-offs then a waterproof jacket, headtorch and a food supply to keep you going between the drop bags is advised. The marshalls at the last checkpoint will check to make sure you are equipped and able for the last 6 mile slog over the big hill.

IT'S LIGHTWEIGHT AND TAKES UP HARDLY ANY SPACE SO YOU MUST CARRY THE MOST SIMPLEST OF SAFETY ITEMS, A SPACE BLANKET!

Be sensible and look out for the safety of your fellow runners too.

In bad weather all runners may have to 'Pair Up' at any stage at the discretion of the race director.
