The Burgh Backyard
When: Saturday 20 March 2027 | 12pm start
Where: Dalkeith Country Park, Edinburgh
Minimum age: 18+
Capacity: 200 runners
Format: 6.7056km every hour, on the hour, until one remains

Burgh Backyard is Edinburgh & Lothian's Backyard Ultra.
Complete a 6.7056km / 4.167 mile yard within one hour.
Whatever time you have left is yours to rest, eat, drink and get ready to go again.
At the start of the next hour, everyone still in the race starts another yard.
Miss the start or fail to complete the yard within the hour and your race is over.
The event continues until only one runner remains. That runner must complete one final yard alone to become the official Last One Standing.
There is no set finish time or distance.

Backyard Rules
Every yard starts exactly on the hour.
Warnings will be given at:

Runners must be inside the starting corral when the bell goes.
There are no late starts.
Each yard must be completed within one hour.
Runners cannot receive personal assistance while on the course. Crew can provide support once the runner has returned to the event village.
Crew, spectators and runners who have withdrawn cannot accompany runners on the course.
Trekking poles and other artificial aids are not permitted.
Runners cannot stop for a few hours and return later. Once you miss a start, withdraw or fail to complete a yard within the hour, your race is over.
The Course
Each yard will be an accurately measured 6.7056km route through Dalkeith Country Park.
The route starts and finishes beside the event village.
The course will be fully marked.
There will be no aid station on the course. Water, hot water and basic food will be available back at base camp.
The final route, elevation profile and GPX will be published before race day.

11.55am: Runners called to the corral
11.57am: 3-minute warning
11.58am: 2-minute warning
11.59am: 1-minute warning
12pm: Yard 1 starts
A new yard starts every hour from then on.
There is no scheduled finish time.
All runners must check out with Race HQ before leaving the event.
Mandatory Equipment
Every runner must have:

Second working headtorch or backup light

Fully charged mobile phone

Suitable footwear

Clothing appropriate for the conditions

Reusable cup or bottle
For night yards we also recommend reflective or hi-vis clothing.
Runners without the required lighting or safety equipment may not be allowed to start a yard.
Event Village
Each runner can bring one tent or gazebo with a maximum footprint of 3m x 3m for resting, refuelling and storing equipment.
Each runner may have up to three support crew members.
Crew, equipment, chairs and tables must fit within the runner’s allocated area. Additional crew or spectator shelters are not permitted.
There will be no organiser-provided individual runner shelter.
All belongings and equipment remain the runner’s responsibility.
Every yard returns to the event village on the Palace Lawn at Dalkeith Palace.
Support Crew
Support crew can help runners between yards with food, drink, kit changes, foot care and general race support.
Crew cannot provide assistance while a runner is on the course and cannot run or walk the yard with them.
Support crew do not need a separate ticket.
Crew who are coming and going during the event must park outside Dalkeith Country Park.
Campervans
A limited number of campervan spaces will be available close to the event village.
The campervan area is approximately one minute from the starting corral and gives no advantage over runners based within the main event village.
Spaces must be arranged in advance.

The event village is located on the Palace Lawn at Dalkeith Palace, Dalkeith Country Park, EH22 2NA.
Runner parking is free within the park and approximately a five-minute walk from the event village.
Enter through the Town Gates at the bottom of Dalkeith High Street and follow event signage and marshal instructions.
There is no vehicle drop-off directly at the event village.
Support crew who plan to come and go must park outside the park using Dalkeith High Street or surrounding public parking areas. Parking on Dalkeith High Street is free.
Full arrival instructions will be sent before the event.

This is primarily a self-supported event.
Bring your own meals, race nutrition, clothing and equipment for as long as you plan to race.
Power at the event village is reserved for event operations. Runners should bring battery packs, spare batteries and everything needed to keep their own equipment charged.
BBQs, camping stoves, gas burners, generators and open flames are not permitted.
Results and Prizes
Every completed yard and total distance will be recorded.
Every runner will receive a Burgh Backyard event medal.
There is only one official Backyard finisher. The final remaining runner must complete one additional solo yard within the hour to become Burgh Backyard Last One Standing.
The Last Man Standing and Last Woman Standing will each receive a running-shop voucher.
The Assist, the final runner to complete a yard alongside the eventual winner, will also receive a running-shop voucher.
Spectators
Spectators are welcome within designated event areas.
They cannot accompany runners on the course or enter the starting corral.
Anyone under 18 must be supervised by a responsible adult and cannot act as support crew.
