Water temperature

Going on average water temperatures for the end of September over the last few years, expect the water temperature in the estuary to be around 14°C. The temperature in the estuary can vary depending on the amount of rainfall and sunshine leading up to the event, wind can also play a part. We will keep you updated on the water temperature in the run up to the event.

WETSUIT or SKINS (skins swimmers will need previous experience of similar time in similar water temperatures)

It is expected that The Classic swimmers will take around 30 minutes, the Beat The Tide swimmers will take around 60 minutes, Escape To Aberdovey swimmers will take around 90 minutes, and Tafol Tumble swimmers will take up to 2 hours.

The DOVEY 13 swimmers will take up to 3 hours. PLEASE NOTE - the actual start times will be decided on the day based on conditions.

REFUNDS

If you cancel 2 months prior to the event you will get a full refund, thereafter there are no refunds, but entries can be transferred either to other swim friends or to the following year's event. The sooner you let us know of any changes the better.

Please note that in the unlikely event that any swim is cancelled due to extreme conditions which include very high winds or dense fog impeding the view of the swimmers by the safety cover, or unexpected pollution in the water, we will endeavour to arrange an alternative swim, or transfer your entry to the following year, and donate any remaining funds to the work of The Outward Bound Trust, Aberdovey.

It's BIG SUNDAY

Following on from Aberdovey Swim's fabulous debut in 2017 we have an additional unique challenge for Sunday, the UK's longest estuary swim, The DOVEY 13.

Swim from the beautiful beach in Aberdovey all the way up to the tidal limit of the Dovey estuary covering 13km of splendour, a journey that transitions from coast to mountain, from salt water to river water...

There will be tidal assistance, it's expected that most swimmers will finish in less than 3 hours.

If you can swim consistently for 2.5 hours at 3km/h then you are in the right ball park.

Be a pioneer! Become a founding swimmer of The DOVEY 13!

Entry fee includes transport from the end to the start.

ESCAPE TO ABERDOVEY 6km

This is more than a special swim, it is a unique experience.

You will board the Jet Boat belonging to The Outward Bound Trust and cruise 6km upstream just past Smuggler's Cove. Along the way you will have a chance to take in the beautiful village of Aberdovey from a special perspective on the estuary... you will also no doubt be reccying the route of your upcoming swim!

Around Smuggler's Cove you will "jump ship" and start your epic 6k swim back to Aberdovey beach.

This unique swim is limited to 12 particiapnts, enter early to avoid disappointment.

NEW FOR 2018! ~ THE TAFOL TUMBLE 8km

Starting form the Aberdovey beach swim 4km around the Jetty, on past the picturesque village and Penhelig corner, carry on past the Roman Road, Picnic Island, The Outward Bound Trust, the small castle (Trefri), and on all the way to a pebbly beach where the River Tafol joins the River Dovey at the settlement of Abertafol. This is the half-way mark.

At Abertafol you will "tumble-turn" and swim back to Aberdovey, hopefully your tumble coincides with the turning of the tide. Expect the middle third of this swim to be the most challenging as it is likely that you will be swimming against a little tide during this time. Oh and the last 100m is good fun swimming across around 4 knots of tide into the salvation of Aberdovey beach!

The TAFOL TUMBLE is 8km of challenging, engaging and adventurous swimming.

Be a Tafol Tumble Pioneer!

BEAT THE TIDE 4km

This is quite a special swim, one of the most beautiful estuary swims in the UK. The level of challenge is not to be underestimated.

You will start on the beach just west of the iconic Jetty. The swim takes you around Aberdovey Wharf and Jetty, on past the picturesque village and Penhelig corner. You will then carry on past Picnic Island and The Outward Bound Trust up to a big yellow house, and to what looks like a small castle (Trefri) on an island.

This "castle" will be the turnaround point, at high tide it sits on an island reminiscent of something out of an Enid Blyton adventure! You will touch the island and turn, hopefully the tide will turn just as you do...

THE CLASSIC

This swim will start on the beach just west of the Jetty.

The swim takes you around Aberdovey Wharf and the iconic Jetty (with slight tidal assistance), on past the picturesque village and up to Penhelig corner where a large Buoy will mark the turnaround point. Swim back to the beach with a little tidal assistance towards the end of your swim.

The turnaround point may present some swimming against a slight tidal flow depending on when you get to the turnaround point!

It's one of the most picturesque and interesting 1.5km swims in the UK.
