Following the installation of the SolarEye path-finder lights on the pavement (essentially the same as the opening mile of our 5 Milers) it has opened up the possibility of holding one-mile races along this straight and flat stretch, which has been nicknamed locally as The Runway. So, we plan to hold four events on Friday evenings once the sun goes down, and the lights come on. Note: The video/graphic above highlights the effectiveness of the lights, but also makes the darkness appear more intense than it is in reality!
Event start time is 7pm.
However, it will still be dark so we will not be running them as normal races, but as time trials (which we did during covid) - utilising our chip timing system. We will set runners off one at a time at in approximately 1-2 second intervals, with fastest runners going first, after each group of 20 has set off, we will have a 30 second pause to create a gap to allow cars to enter/leave the car parks. We will also supply each runner with a LED ankle band which will be compulsory to wear and be returned with timing tags (we prefer runners not to use headtorches, as they can dazzle oncoming drivers and pedestrians).
For Future Runway Mile events, entries will open ten days before the race day and close two days before, this is to reduce the number of runners asking to transfer their entry or not turning up.
Cancellations:
Should an event be cancelled due to weather all entries will be transferred to the next date. If you are unable to attend on the new date, then we either move your entry to another of the Runway Mile dates or we will refund your fee (less £1 EntryCental fees which we can't recover). Should the final event be cancelled then we transfer entries to 2025 Spring Coast Road 5km race.
Prizes:
There will be no prizes for individual races. However there will be an award based on each runner's best Age Graded performance (ie regardless of running in all or just one race). There will an award for best upto 40 year old, and one for 41+ year old, male & female.
Future Dates (all Friday)
15th November, 10th January, 7th February
Numbers will be limited to 100.
The Runway Mile route can be viewed by clicking here.
Please note numbers are to be collected on the day - nothing will be posted out.
New Marske Harriers has been organising road races for over 30 years. We have tried to always be ahead of the curve introducing new innovations whilst holding to the principle of providing races for club runners and providing value for money rather than being driven by the profit motive. Any profits are used to promote the sport of athletics and running within the borough of Redcar & Cleveland and supporting causes that enhance the environment for runners.
