Organiser's Description
Wye Valley Runners Beginners Group 8
Meeting Place: Hereford Leisure Centre, Holmer Rd, Hereford HR4 9UD
When: Wed 4th March 2026, then every Wednesday for 8 weeks
6:15 pm for 6:30 pm start
A progressive running course for Beginners and those wishing to start afresh. The course caters for adults aged 18 years and over. You will learn to run efficiently and effectively, in a way that minimises the risk of injury. This is not a Couch to 5k course; rather, it teaches you how to run first.
The course is £35 and is for eight weeks, and includes one year's free membership to Wye Valley Runners (normally £35)
With an emphasis on providing a friendly, supportive atmosphere and encouraging each runner to develop at their own pace, this eight-week programme will mark the start of the rest of your running journey.
We will run alongside you and offer encouragement. Led by experienced coach and club member Kate Green and a support team of experienced runners from the club, you can learn from their knowledge what motivates them, what helped and what didn’t when starting. We were all beginners once - we know it can be daunting at first - but we know the benefits are too good not to share.
When you complete the beginner's programme, we will reward you with free membership for one year with Wye Valley Runners - normally costing £35 a year. Wye Valley Runners is a relaxed, friendly, small club that welcomes runners of all abilities - the ideal place to continue your running journey.
Why run?
Many of us run for health reasons, and running has great benefits for both physical and mental health. It’s a great stress buster and a good way of maintaining a healthy weight. It also offers time out from our busy lives to enjoy being outside.
Running is like most things in life: you get out of it what you put in. There are no shortcuts to improvement, but if you can build running into your routine, you will soon start to see the benefits. The beginner's programme should be effective if you can commit to running and stick to the suggestions in the plan.
Health issues or injuries
We must know about anything likely to impact your running.
Please have a word with Kate, your run leader, if you are concerned about anything at all.
Any health conditions – please check with your GP before starting on the beginners' group.
What to wear
Running is great because you don’t need to wear anything special, and you don’t need any equipment other than a decent pair of shoes and a sports bra for women. Once you improve and are running for longer periods, you will find you don’t need to wear as many clothes, but as a beginner, you may want to wear a couple of layers, which will keep you warm while you are running/walking.
Who will I be running with?
The group limit is 20 max - this means everyone gets to know each other, we can keep it personal, and you get to make new friends with similar interests and ambitions.
What if I cannot afford to join?
Wye Valley Runners has a fund for people who would be excluded from being able to join the club or the course due to financial restraints. If you would like to come along but cannot manage the fee, please contact Kate privately, and she will help you enrol
