Skills School General Information

What is Skills School?

Triathlon Scotland Skills School is based on the Triathlon England and British Triathlon model designed to enhance the young triathlete development (YTD) process by helping athletes and coaches explore fun and creative ways to be their best.  The main focus is therefore on creating a constructive learning atmosphere focused on developing skills in safe, engaging and fun environments.  This will improve the athlete and coach experience increasing their retention in triathlon.

The aim and ethos of our new area skills schools are to provide access for young triathletes to come together and receive additional coaching in a fun, creative and inspiring learning environment.

Each area skills school will meet approximately nine times a year and coaching will be both low cost and designed to proactively develop the whole athlete, rather than driven by performance targets and race results.

Young triathletes participating in area skills schools can benefit from the additional coaching to support their own personal development and aspirations.  For example, if a young triathlete does not have access to regular club training sessions, the area skills schools will help to provide some structure for independent training and development.

The area skills schools sessions will help to support young triathletes in developing the skills and behaviours required for Inter Regional Championships selection and Foundation Squad selection.

Who’s it for?

Skills schools are open to all 11-16 olds throughout Scotland giving all athletes the opportunity to access the Triathlon Scotland pathway, it will be completely inclusive and open to all who meet the basic competencies of being able swim, bike and run continuously for five minutes.  Age at 31st December on the year of the session.

We recognise that individual triathletes will develop at different paces and should be supported at their own stage of development and experience, to pursue their own route through the sport.  The area skills schools are designed to complement both single sport and triathlon clubs, and triathletes involved in the skill schools will continue to train with, and race for their individual clubs where, local clubs exist.

You must be a Triathlon Scotland Member to attend Skills School Sessions however you can try your first session before signing up.  You can join Triathlon Scotland by following this link: Join Triathlon Scotland
