The Stortford Tri Midweek Aquathlon Series

The series consists of 5 races; once a month from May until September and held on a Tuesday evenings.  Each race is a 750m, one lap open water swim followed by a 5km run on the nearby towpath.   Races usually start 7:30pm, but the last races of the series start a little earlier to allow for the fading light.

The dates for this year’s races are:

  • Race 1 – Tues 23rd May - start time 7:30pm
  • Race 2 – Tues 20th June - start time 7:30pm
  • Race 3 – Tues 11th July - start time 7:30pm
  • Race 4 – Tues 15th Aug - start time 7:00pm (note the earlier time)
  • Race 5 – Tues 12th September - start time 6:30pm (note the earlier time)

Advance online race entry fee for each race is £13, plus £3 day race licence if you are not a BTF member.  You are expected to show your BTF membership at sign-in for each event.  Entries on the day cost an extra £3.

A race number and swim hat will be issued for the series – you must keep these and bring to each race that you do.  Replacement numbers and hats will be charged for.

All competitors will receive a race goodie bag containing their number, hat and some other items.   Goodie bags are one per competitor for the series (not one per race).

We are pleased to be supported once more by Stort Valley Cycles ( www.stortvalleycycles.co.uk/ ), a cycle retailer specialising in Giant bikes located on the A414 just north of Harlow, Essex.   They stock a full range of children's and family cycles through to the latest carbon racing bikes. The family has been in the cycle trade for over 40 years, providing quality products and services to families and individuals.

We would also like to thank Herts Boat Rescue ( www.hertsboatrescue.org.uk ) who provide our water cover.   Herts Boat Rescue is a voluntary organisation with run by unpaid volunteers. Their mission is to promote water safety in Hertfordshire and the surrounding borders and work with all the agencies relating to water to make Hertfordshire's water a safer place. They are funded entirely through donations.

The Venue

The race venue is at the picturesque Redricks Leisure Lakeswww.redrickslakes.co.uk ) near Sawbridgeworth that is easily accessible by car from the A414 and train from Harlow Mill station via a short walk.  The venue has established itself as an open water training facility and is used by triathlon clubs from London and the surrounding area. Hot and colds drinks are on sale from the club house and changing, shower and toilet facilities are available on-site.

Race Format + Routes

The format of the races is a 750m open water swim followed by 5km run on footpaths alongside the neighbouring canal.  Distances are approximate.   Waves are decided after registration closes and announced at the briefing.  There is usually one start wave, though this may be changed if entry numbers are particularly high.

The swim consists of an anticlockwise loop of the lake; starting in deep water, opposite transition.  It is a roughly triangular course with a slight dog-leg to the right as you approach the upper end of the lake to go around the first turn buoy.  There are two large turn buoys on the course - turn left / anticlockwise round each.   After the first turn you have a short swim to the second swim buoy, and then left again for a longer leg back towards the swim exit.

You will exit the swim into a grassed transition area where you will leave your wetsuit and put on your running shoes before proceeding on the run. At the swim exit there will be timekeepers to record your swim time split - please shout out your race number.   On exit of transition, time keepers will again record your time for a T1 Split.

Leaving the transition area you run out of the Lake grounds and follow the route arrows along the designated path.  Marshals will be on hand at strategic points along the course.   We have used two different run routes – a route up and down along the tow path, and a circular route that crosses over the canal. The distance of both routes is the same; the up and down route is used most frequently; route will be advised at the race briefing.    On the circular route, where the course crosses the exit of the pub car-park it is mandatory for all runners to stop and pause before continuing - to ensure safety and fairness.   A marshal will be present to monitor this.  You will re-enter the Lake grounds at the same point that you exited and run back to finish in front of the club house.

Prizes

Each race will have an individual prizes for the winner of the men’s and women’s senior and veteran categories. Veteran men will be anyone who turns 40 or older in the race year, and for women anyone who turns 35 or older. All others will be deemed seniors.   Prizes need to be picked up in person on the night.

There will be individual series prizes in men’s and women’s age categories as above.  Points will be given for finishing positions in gender and the person with the least points from 3 races will be the winner.  There will also be a Club series prize with points awarded in the same way from ALL the races and with scores coming from the first 3 men a first 2 women from the same club.   In all cases where there is a tie the tie will be broken by comparing accumulated finishing times for the races that score.

We record time manually and endeavour to have the full race results within 15 minutes of the last athlete finishing. This is usually possible, but please be patient with us if there is a delay, and enjoy some of the refreshments available at the Lakes Café.
