12 hour Mormond Hill Fundraiser for Kayleigh's Wee Stars and Hamish Dear's Warm Hugs

19 Sep 2020

This Festival is in a testing state, and is not open for public sign-ups until the organiser has launched it.

Organiser's Description

The '12 hour Mormond Hill Run' returns in 2020 - in aid of Hamish Dear's Warm Hugs and Kayleigh's Wee Stars.

It will be held on Saturday 19th September 2020 starting at 06:00am.

I’ve been holding off with this to see how things progress with the current situation, but unfortunately, we’re going to have to “cancel” the event for this year.  There is just too much red tape and restrictions currently required for an event like this to go ahead in line with Scottish Athletics guidance.  Our main priority is always going to be the safety of our runners and the general public.

However, we are still keen to have some form of fundraiser for the amazing charities Hamish Dear’s Warm Hugs and Kayleigh’s Wee Stars, so entries will remain open for anyone who wants to do their own virtual challenge.

If you are already signed up, you have 3 options:

  1. Full refund – please send a message to and let me know that you would like a full refund and I’ll arrange that via Entry Central.
  2. Take part in the virtual challenge!  Your full entry fee will be donated to the charities and you will be encouraged to direct people to the fundraising page on Just Giving to sponsor the team!
  3. Donate your entry fee to the charities (but not to take part in the virtual challenge)

If you are taking part in the virtual challenge, it is simply going to be a case of running on Saturday 19th September and following a similar format to that which you had signed up for – please post details of your run on Facebook/Strava etc. and tag explore running ( and use the hashtag #ExploreRunningVirtualChallenge

For the sake of keeping as safe as possible, we would encourage you to run at a location close to your home if possible.  For example, if you live in Banchory, running up and down Scolty Hill for 12 hours would be perfect, or if you are near Strichen, then Mormond Hill would still be the best option!  If you are signed up as a relay team, just try to work that out amongst your team (you don’t have to all run in the same location) and if you are signed up for 1,2 or 3 laps, then just run something similar (1 lap is 8 miles at Mormond Hill).

Many thanks for your support!

Please note that this is not a race.  It is a fundraiser run only!

It's a simple concept - run from Ritchie Hall, Strichen, up Hospital Brae, up the quarry road to Hunter's Lodge, then down the other side and up to the gate just before the satellites (4 miles out) then turn and run back (4 miles back).  A total of 8 miles and over 1,000ft of ascent.  Then repeat as many times as possible within 12 hours.  There will be a 0.25 mile loop marked out round the football pitches at Ritchie Hall to carry on running if you're timed out for another full 8 mile loop.

Runners can sign up individually to take on the full 12 hours, as part of a relay team, or to run a certain number of laps.

The route will be marked and marshalled but keep an eye on for details of a guided run on the route beforehand.

Your entry fee will be used to pay the expenses for the event (hire of Ritchie Hall facilities, medals, catering etc) and any surplus will go to the charities.  We would ask that you promote the justgiving page (details to follow) so that we can all try to raise as much money as possible for these wonderful charities!

The run starts from the Ritchie Hall playing field and the route takes in stunning views of the buchan countryside.

When at the summit you can see from the 'Sea to Bennachie'.

Registration will be at 05:30am beside the Ritchie Hall.

Start time will be 06:00am, and a run briefing will take place prior to the start.

Early Bird Entries (pre-31 January 2020) are £15 per runner. (plus 60p booking fee, which goes to Entry Central)

All other Entries (post-31 January 2020) are £20 per runner. (plus 80p booking fee, which goes to Entry Central)

Over 18s runners only.

Aid station. There will be 1 aid station situated at Ritchie Hall with a variety of food/drinks (provided by volunteers).  Water will be available at the 4 mile point.  If you have any specific fuelling requirements, please take your own.

There will be marshals at various points throughout the course. Please treat them with respect and follow ALL marshal instructions carefully. They are in place primarily for your safety.
