Island Races - Mersea Island - Sprint Triathlon (Sea Swim)
09 Sep 17
Island Races is held on Mersea Island. The Island is situated on the Blackwater Estuary on the East Coast of England in Essex, approximately 8 miles from the nearest town Colchester and 60 miles from London. Mersea is a beautiful Island surrounded by stunning beaches, coastal paths, cliffs and marshland spoiled with wildlife. East Mersea boasts the Cudmore Grove Country Park that teems with wildlife, in particular migrating birds. It is also famous for its eroding cliffs that have been known to expose both bear and mammoth fossils. West Mersea is the bigger of the two villages and is also the hub of the sailing and fishing communities. There are creeks littered with moored yachts and fishing boats and the surrounding marshland is protected for its populations of birds and occasional seals.
The swim starts with a dive/jump off the floating pontoon jetty, situated in the heart of the fishing and sailing waterfront. Competitors then swim 750m along the coast through the moorings to the first beach, Shingle Point, behind the iconic houseboats. Once out of the water they run down the boardwalk to the transition area just off Coast Road, where wetsuits are stripped off and bikes mounted. The Cycle leads competitors around the country roads of West Mersea before returning to the transition area to take on the Run. The Run has the competitors on roads for the first half before exiting onto the beach for the final 2.5km straight to the finish at Shingle Point. There, spectators gather to cheer each competitor back across the line. It has become a tradition for each competitor to remain at the finish to cheer each and every participant home.
The chosen charity for this event is The Colchester Hospitals Charity. Please see our website www.islandraces.com for more information.
