Organiser's Description

Kirkcudbright Academy Half Marathon, 10k and Walk

Saturday 23rd May 2020

As organisers of the Kirkcudbright Academy Half Marathon,10k, Walk, and Fun Run, which was due to take place on May 23rd, we have been carefully following the development of the Covid-19 Coronovirus.  Our concern has been not to overreact to the pandemic, nor to under-react and find ourselves insensitive to the health of our community, participants, volunteers and their extended family and friends.

We have taken into account the latest UK government and medical advice that the outbreak may continue for a number of months; the recommended self-isolation of at-risk groups for the next 12 weeks; the Scottish government advice on large gatherings; and finally the national school closures.

As such, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Kirkcudbright Academy Half Marathon, for only the second time in its 37 year history.

For those who have pre-entered one of our events online, we will communicate directly with you regarding our refund policy within the next week.

We would like to thank this year’s sponsors for their very generous support of a very worthy cause.

We will be back next year and look forward very much to seeing you for KAHM 2021.

In the meantime keep healthy, and keep running!

This is a festival of three events consisting of a half marathon distance walk starting at 9:00am followed by a half marathon and 10km running events starting at 11:00am.  This event takes place in Scotland's artists' town of Kirkcudbright, located on the beautiful south coast of Dumfries & Galloway.

Starting and finishing at Kirkcudbright Academy, the Half Marathon route takes in the scenic sights around Kirkcudbright town before heading out of town along the 'Beeches' road to complete a small loop around Twynholm.  Runners then proceed south to take in the picturesque views of the Solway Estuary before heading back north beside Kirkcudbright Bay.  The finish is a short route through the west side of the town to the finish line at the school.  The 10km route follows the same half marathon route through the town at the start but splits to head south along the west side of Kirkcudbright Bay.  It turns around at 7kms to head back into Kirkcudbright and the finish.  Water stops will be approximately every 5kms.  A map of the route is available on the event website

The event is a scottishathletics licenced event, licence applied for, and both half marathon and 10k are certified measured, held under UK Athletics rules.  As the event is held on public roads, no headphones/earphones while running will be permitted for your safety and that of other road users, allowing you to hear the instructions of marshals on route.

All finishers will receive a memento on completing their event.  Prizes will be given for both running events being men's and ladies first three finishers, plus first under 20; veteran 40; veteran 50 and veteran 60+.  A men's and ladies team prize (for top 3) will be given for the half marathon running race.  Prizes are also available for the first local finishers.

Car Parking

There is plenty of parking within the town of Kirkcudbright, notably for those sticking around after the race. Official competitor parking will be on the field at Gartshore Park, Castledykes Road.  Please do not park at the Swimming Pool unless also enjoying these facilities.

Race HQ

Race numbers and chip timing devices are to be collected from the school hall at Kirkcudbright Academy on the day.  Please arrive in plenty of time ahead of the start of the race.  The chip timing is a shoe tag that will need to be tied through your laces.  The start and finish are within 200 metres of Race HQ.  If the entry limit has not been reached, late entries will be available on the day for a supplement to cover extra administration.

The school has men's and ladies toilets, changing and shower facilities.  There is no secure storage area for baggage, although can be left in the school hall at your own risk.  We would recommend leaving no valuables in your bags.

Around the finish area there will be various stalls/entertainment and food available whilst seeing your fellow competitors complete their event.  Please ensure you dispose of any rubbish in the bins provided around the site.  This is essential to maintain the goodwill and support of the school and their janitors.

Results and Prizes

Results for individual runners will be available immediately after finishing.  Please ensure you return your shoe tags on completing your race.  Prize giving will be held at 1:30pm or shortly afterwards.
