Heddington 5k - Handicap reverse! August 2019

Heddington 5k - AUGUST
**HANDICAP EVENT, ALSO IN REVERSE!**
Tuesday 13th August 2019
What have we done to the Heddington 5k for August?
Introduced a whole lot of fun! We wanted to throw something different into the mix for August after organising the traditional three race series from May - July 2019. The August event will be organised in a handicap style, so there will be no mass start. We will have collected 5k time predictions for all of our entrants and the person with the longest predicted time will set off first, with the fastest predicted time setting off last (*further explanation just below), times will be based on each individuals best 5k performance over the past 12 months.
The event will also be run in reverse, so anti-clockwise rather than the traditional clockwise route. The finish will be moved to the village hall to allow for a safe finish while the start will be just around the corner from the Ivy Inn, circa 200m down the road from the traditional finish (to ensure it is still an accurately measured 5km route). So the below route description is to be read understanding that we will be running broadly from the Ivy Inn to the Village Hall, rather than the traditional clockwise route!
*A little more info on the Handicap: Timing is everything! For explanations sake, we will say that the longest predicted time is 45 minutes (runner A), and the fastest predicted time is 15:30 (Runner B) - there will of course be lots of runners between them! Runner A will set off at 19:30:00 (gps time, as controlled by the starter marshal), meanwhile Runner B will set off 29 minutes 30 seconds later at 19:59:30 (GPS time). In theory, this sets up a grandstand finish of all competitors with the win being up for grabs by anybody (well, whoever takes the most off of their personal best time) with all runners having the fun of racing in this exciting environment.
PLEASE NOTE - PRIOR TO RACE DAY AND ON RACE DAY, WE WILL ISSUE START TIMING INFORMATION, YOU MUST START AT THE GPS TIME STATED TO GET A TIME FOR THE EVENT AS THIS IS HOW THE CHIP TIMING WILL WORK - YOU MUSTN'T MISS YOUR START TIME. This will be controlled very well on the day by marshals who will set you off at the correct time - you will queue in a line at the start waiting to set off.
Setting off circa 200m beyond the Charles Willis Hall (SN11 OPH) (instead, we will actually finish at the Charles Willis Hall for the handicap event, 200m before the traditional start line) the route takes in a downhill start before (yes this means you will actually be finishing uphill - but there will be plenty of close competition by this point in time to keep you going) levelling out to get yourself well on your way to what will be three quick miles. At 0.8 miles in you bear right and continue along a flat fast 0.5 mile before bearing right once again at Broads Green (yes, instead of turning right all the time, you will run anticlockwise, so lots of left turns for this event). From here you will continue along a couple of straight sections of country road for 1 mile before hitting the junction of Stockley Lane/Stockley Road. From this point you will again bear right to carry along Stockley Road along flat country lanes for 0.8 mile heading back towards the heart of Heddington to the finish, which is outside the Ivy Inn, perfect for those of you who feel an alcoholic beverage will be the ideal way to celebrate your achievements around this flat, fast route (we will actually be starting 200m down the road from the Ivy Inn to start the event, because we will have moved the finish - the traditional start line - by 200m. This will be marked out on the night).
Please note this race is run in a "stripped back" style. We at Calne Running Club simply want people to get out and enjoy their chance at achieving a PB around this course. The race has an ARC race permit and a certificate of course accuracy, along with suitable medical cover and plenty of water at the finish.... and chip timing courtesy of LPS Events! In an attempt to keep races in the runner's diary that are cheap yet still enjoyable, you will not receive any memento at the end. However, you will receieve a sweet chocolate treat to get your energy levels back up! Your small entry fee simply goes into the organisation of the event, ensuring it is safe and enjoyable for all.
