The Barking Road Runners' Phipps 5K (formerly known as the August Bank Holiday 5K) is an open road race that welcomes runners of all abilities and experience.  Whether you are a dedicated club runner, or a newer runner participating in your very first race, our race is for you!

The Phipps 5K gained its current name in 2021 to commemorate Owen Phipps, a former member of Barking Road Runners who sadly passed away in 2019.

The team prizes for our race have been kindly sponsored by Lee Middleton Sports Massage Therapy, based in Romford.

Our race forms the seventh leg of the 2022 East London FiVes Interclub Series (ELVIS). The series is sponsored by Phil Hernon.

There will also be a FREE 2K fun run on the day for kids under 15, weather permitting. Entries for the fun run will be on the day only.

When:

Monday 28th August 2023.

Where:

Barking Park, Longbridge Road, Barking, Essex IG11 8TA.

Time:

Main race 10:30 am. The 2K fun run will start after the main race, at approximately 11:30am. 

Entry fee:

£12 (£10 affiliated) for the main race.  Minimum age 15 on the day of the race. We regret no refunds and no deferrals. The 2K fun run is free to enter, and is open to children aged younger than 15 on the day.

Bib numbers for the 5K race are to be collected on the day, by no later than 10:15 am. Bib numbers for members of ELVIS clubs should be collected by the club representative. 

A limited number of entries may be available on the day, charged at £15 (£13 affiliated), if the race is not sold out in advance. Please bring the correct change and hand in your completed entry form by 10am.  (Entry forms will be available at our registration desk on the day of the race.)

Transfers:

Transfers are allowed up to the race closing date. Please contact the email address in the confirmation email with full details of both runners.

Course description:

The race uses a 2-lap course, all on asphalt paths. Note that the course is identical to that used by Barking parkrun. It will be well-marshaled and signed. Headphones are allowed, but please make sure you are aware of your surroundings and can hear the marshals.

Getting to the park:

The park is approximately 15 minutes walk from Barking station, which is served by the District and Hammersmith & City tube lines, London Overground, and mainline C2C rail services.  There are also several bus routes stopping near the park. Limited free car parking is available within the park, via the South Park Drive entrance.  There is another car park accessible via the main gate in Longbridge Road, but this may incur a charge, as may parking on the roads outside the park.

Facilities:

Toilets will be available near the start and finish areas. There will not be a bag drop. There is a cafe in the park near the finish line. We hope the Acorn public house, on the corner of Longbridge Road and South Park Drive, will also be open on race day should anyone fancy a post-race beverage.

Runners awarded an individual prize for finishing in any of the overall top 3 places will be ignored when awarding the prizes for age categories.  

The results will be published on the club's website as soon as possible after the race, and will also be uploaded to Power of 10.  The race will be held under UKA rules (UKA licence number 2023-46067).
