The 'Dunoon Presents'...Ultra Marathon and Relay
08 Oct 16
Welcome to the :
2016 Dunoon Presents Ultra Marathon and Relay - Starting at 10am on Saturday 8th Oct
The Dunoon/Loch Eck 50k Ultra will start from the famous Benmore Botanical Gardens approximately 5 miles outside of Dunoon (coach transfer from Dunoon incl). The route will initially head south down "Puddle Lane" passing by Uig Hall and then climbing up a most spectacular gorge path through Pucks Glen, here you will be treated to a mixture of magical waterfalls and jurassic like fauna! Once on the forestry trail you head north climbing high above Loch Eck. Take the time to absorb the stunning scenery as you will be treated to spectacular views north and south of the Loch, particularly as you reach the highest section of the run 600m above sea level.
A welcoming 2 mile descent towards Glenbranter first passing by Sir Harry Lauder's monument. Here you will cross the A815 passing the periphery of Glenbranter village, past the Forestry commission buildings and returning south on the west side of Loch Eck. The path follows the Loch shore closely and the legs will welcome this flatter section.
Once back at Benmore Botanical Gardens you only have 12 miles left. The route continues south towards Glenkin where you will begin to climb again on the forest trails towards Dunoon. As you gain height you will be rewarded with fantastic views over the River Clyde and here you will be on the home straight! Less than 10k to the finish, the trail leads you down into the natural woodland of the Bishop's Glen hugging the reservoir and eventually taking you down to the final 1 mile along the West Bay. This last mile stretches north alongside the beach giving you beautiful views of the hills above Wemyss Bay, Inverkip and Gourock.
Don't be tempted to cool off in the water as the finish will be in sight ! Look up to your left and Robert Burns' love, Highland Mary will be looking down on you, sitting just below the ruins of the 12th Century Dunoon Castle. Look to the right and you will see Dunoon Pier, 180 years old and famously linked with the paddle steamer The Waverley. The race will finish on the newly refurbished and restored pier building and a perfect end to what must be one of the most scenic Ultras in the country. A truly rousing welcome awaits you at the finish !
