Scurry Yellowcraig sea swim and run festival

27 Sep 2020

Organiser's Description

Welcome to the inaugural Yellowcraig sea swim and run festival hosted by Scurry Events.

As these are obviously unprecedented times for hosting events and we do not yet know if we will be allowed to proceed as planned in September we are opening this event up straight to a 'waitlist'. This means you can enter the event with all your details as if you were entering for a live event however, no payment will be taken.

Assuming we then get the all clear and the various third parties are happy for the event to proceed (East Lothian council, water safety teams, Forth Ports, the RNLI, triathlon Scotland and so on) then we will start to release places on the waitlist. This will be on a first come first served basis.

For now lets look upon the event as happening and as a positive date to aim towards in the event calender.

The 2020 festival consists of 4 separate events:

Scurry Yellowcraig Swim / Run challenge (pairs only) - an 18.5km swim / run challenge starting and finishing at Yellowcraig.

Broad Sands Aquathlon - A 2km swim and 10km sandy beach run.  We aim to sanction this event through triathlon Scotland.

Fidra island swim - a 2km sea swim alongside the scenic Fidra island.

Scurry Yellowcraig 10km Beach run - a scenic 10km beach run from Broad sands to Marine beach, North Berwick and back.

Please see each individual event for more details.

A full water safety team will be in place along with an onshore parmedic and first aid team.

Should we manage to run the event this year then it is very likely we will need to run a sportif style start for each event rather then a mass start which is usual for such events. There will also be other C19 precautions in place all of which will be outlined in any pre-race information passed on before the event.

Competitors will receive a post race drink and snack along with a race memento. More information on prizes and sponsorship will follow in our pre race information and on social media.

We will look forward to seeing you there.

Facilities: Good toilet facilities exist in the yellowcraig carpark with a couple (only 2) of basic outside showers for post swim wetsuit rinsing use if need be. There are no specific changing facilities or indoor showers. We aim to have a small bag drop tent, however this may not be attended at all times and any belongings are left at your own risk. Bring a small drop bag only; we recommend a change of clothes, shoes and a towel. The organisers accept no responsibility for loss of clothing or equipment.

Car Parking: There is ample car parking in the Yellowcraig car park. Please note East Lothian council now charge £2 for daily parking at Yellowcraig and regularly pass out fines for not paying. You will need £2 in coins. Please also be aware of the 2m height restriction for the car parking area nearest to the toilet facilities and registration area.

Refreshments: We aim to have some competitor drinks and sustenance available at (or near) the finish (which may be restricted with C19 measures in place) and an ice cream snack van is likely to be available in the car park area for spectators however, we would still advice bringing your own sustenance if you can.

Competitors will receive a race memento. More information on prizes and sponsorship will follow in our pre race information and on social media.

Swim / Run rules:

1.Entry Criteria: To participate entrants must race in teams of two. Team members must be at least 18 years old on the date of the race. Participants must comply with all event marshal or course rules throughout. Teams may change one team member prior to the race. Teams must attend Registration and the pre race Safety Brief.

2. The Course: A course map will be issued in the pre race information sent out in the week before the event and may be released before then (e.g. on our facebook site). The course will be fully marked following the above route sections except for the 5km Berwick Law section which is in part self navigated although we aim to have some orange tape or markers to follow through the town section. You must follow the marked course at all times. We may be required to amend the course subject to weather conditions. Any changes will be explained in detail during the race Safety Brief.

3. Checkpoints Dibber points will be before and after each run or swim section and we aim to have a snack and water station at the Marine harbour beach section before and after the Berwick Law section of the course.

4. Medical: Participants are obliged to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries. Participants are responsible for ensuring they have sufficient fitness and experience to take part, and will sign a waiver agreement to this effect.

5. Equipment: Teams must present the following Mandatory Equipment at Registration, the Start and Finish: Two wetsuits; Two whistles; Two reusable cups (any reusable cup will be accepted, e.g. collapsible cups, soft flasks, etc.)
Teams must also carry the following equipment throughout the race: Scurry Race vest each: must be worn and visible throughout the race, one race dibber per pair and a Swim Cap each - must be worn and visible throughout the swims.

Prohibited equipment: the following items are prohibited: Floatation devices larger than 100cm x 60cm, Swim fins longer than 15cm, Powered propulsion devices

Teams must be self-supported, outside help on the course is prohibited. An exception will be made for competitors with medical conditions; they must identify themselves to the race organiser prior to the event.

Note: The current swim / run rules state that you must get from the start to the finish as quickly as possible using only equipment that you can carry all the way to the end, i.e you must finish with eveything you started out with! Regulations state that you must wear a wetsuit, carry certain mandatory safety items and that any flotation device should not exceed 100 x 60 cm, but really your imagination is the only other restriction! You can buy equipment or make your own. Check out Ötillö, to see the variety of gear out there!

Most popular is the use of hand paddles, pull boys and fins. Some teams use tow lines and carry bags or tow floats. Some choose to keep it as simple as possible and take as little as they can. Whatever equipment you choose to use while you SwimRun, it is important to train with it and get slick at managing it during transitions when you are wet, cold and tired.

6. Timings and cut offs:  The clock begins when the starter horn goes at the start and finishes when the last team member has crossed the Finish Line. Teams must be able to complete the event within the time limit of 3 1/2 hours. There will be a cut off time for completing the first 2km swim (70 minutes) and completing the Berwick Law section (tbc). If you miss the cut off's you may not be allowed to continue.

7. Team responsibilities: Teams must know the rules and follow them. Participants must offer assistance in case of emergency.

Littering of any kind will result in immediate disqualification. We have been given the privilege of racing through a pristine landscape. Yellowcraig is a local nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and has been awarded a fregional seaside award. Littering will threaten our use of it in years to come.

Participants compete in this event entirely at their own risk, including but not limited to road crossings, bay crossings, river crossings, and all other hazards of the sea and trail.

Teams must sign the Waiver Agreement at Registration. Athletes who have not signed the Agreement will not be allowed to start the race

8. Safety:  Pairs must stay together at all times and must remain less than 10 metres apart.

Teams withdrawing from the event must hand in both of their race vests and dibber at the nearest checkpoint.

Scurry Events may may prevent a team from continuing if they are judged to be unable to safely complete the race.

9. Disqualification: Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification.

10. Media and Sponsor: Teams are allowed to have sponsors marked on their race gear.

Scurry Event race vests are not to be modified in any way and must be worn at all times.

Participants give Scurry Events the right to use pictures and film material taken during the race, to be used free of rights in marketing, press material, internet, television and film

11. Acceptance of the rules: By entering the race each team member accepts the rules in full. All images and rights from the event are reserved. All unauthorised commercial use of images will be legally addressed.

The Scurry Events team will look forward to welcoming you to the first Yellowcraig sea swim and run festival.

Broad Sands Aquathlon

Race Website: www.scurryevents.co.uk

Venue: Ware Rd, North Berwick EH39

Note: It is likely we will restrict this first event to 50 competitors.

Registration: Registration will take place in the Orange marquee at the far end of the car park by the public toilet area.

A scenic and challenging full distance Aquathlon. Triathlon Scotland sanctioning in progress.

The Broad Sands Aquathlon combines the 2km Fidra island swim and follows with a 10km beach trail run.

Please come with your triathlonscotland race licence if you are entering the Aquathlon. If you forget your licence you will have to pay the non-member surcharge! Please plan to leave yourself plenty of time to complete the process and prepare yourself adequately for the race start. The Aquathlon race is run under triathlonscotland rules: It is the responsibility of all competitors to obey the rules,  and be courteous and considerate to any member of the public encountered in the race.

At registration you will be given your race pack comprising: race number; pins; swim cap; timing dibber and a race memento.

Starting from the scenic Yellowcraig broad sands beach and looking on to Fidra island you first swim 500m straight out towards the East of the island and then turn around the first buoy and swim along the full length of the island before swimming around the small island rocks at the 1km furthest point and back towards the East slightly nearer the shore in a similar path towards the finish.

Draft swim route https://gb.mapometer.com/swimming/route_5014874.html

On exciting the water first head to the marked transition area near the finish and swap your wetsuit for running shoes before embarking on a challenging 10km beach trail run.  Runners then stay on the sand all the way to North Berwick harbour. Turning at the harbour slip way you will pass the 3 scenic islands of Fidra, the Lamb and Craigleith each way. Reaching broad sands runners continue right to the end of the beach and continue further still on towards Archerfield before being directed back along a narrow coastal path towards the finish area above transition.

In the swim we stay shore side of Fidra island to avoid the faster currents further out in the Forth and will have expert water safety cover with two safety ribs and ample kayak and paddle boarders supporting swimimers around the route. The swim will be 1 lap of 2000 metres with a beach start. As this involves open water swimming in Scotland wetsuits are required!

Robert Louis Stevenson often visited the beaches as a child and Fidra island is said to have been the inspiration for Treasure Island, as well as being described in his novel Catriona. The lighthouse was built in 1885 by David and Thomas Stevenson and has been automated since 1970 (The light flashes 4 times every 30 seconds).

Competitors will receive a post race drink and snack along with a race memento. More information on prizes and sponsorship will follow in our pre race information and on social media.
