Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboarding weekend at Longtown
Join the team at Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust for a brilliant weekend of Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), fun and exploration in the beautiful Wye Valley AONB and Brecon Beacons National Park. You will be staying at Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre (www.longtownoutdoorlearning.co.uk) which will provide a comfortable, welcoming base for the weekend and has its own outdoor SUP training pool on-site. The weekend will be led by John Clark, Mike Fawcett and Rae Hardy. Mike and Rae are experienced Canoe and Kayak coaches who have completed the BCU DSM SUP module and White Water SUP assessments and have been leading SUP sessions at the centre and on the Gower since 2017. John Clark is a qualified Paddlesports Instructor who has completed SUP Coach training and White Water SUP training. All the instructional team members have recently completed a 65 km SUP journey on the River Nene in Northamptonshire as well as regular personal paddling on the River Wye and the sea.
The course will assemble on Friday evening allowing for travelling and eating time en-route. After welcomes and a course introduction there will be a kit issue session and a short practical ice-breaker session focussing on core- stability (on dry land!). After the activity there will be the chance to walk down the road to the local hostelry to sample the local hospitality.
After breakfast on Saturday, we will have the first practical session on the centre’s outdoor training pool. This will be a fully immersive experience as we get to grips with basic skills and build confidence with self-rescue. Laughter and fun is guaranteed as we explore the envelope of our balance and skills.
After showers and an early lunch we will load up the kit and prepare for our first SUP journey on the beautiful and tranquil Brecon and Monmouth Canal and the chance to translate the basic skills from the morning to a still water journey. We are confident that you will finish the day feeling tired, happy and ready to enjoy some time chilling before a proposed evening meal at the local pub.
On Sunday we will drive to the beautiful Wye Valley A.O.N.B for an introduction to moving water and the chance to explore this stunning river valley where wildlife abounds and there is lots of fun to be had. The course will finish at 2.30 pm at the river.
Previous Stand Up Paddleboarding experience is not necessary. Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before, this weekend is designed for you. You will need a reasonable level of fitness, determination and a good sense of humour to enjoy this weekend. Water confidence is more important than your swimming ability but some sections of the river journeys will involve deep water.
