Introduction to Trail Running weekend at Longtown
Join the team at Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust for a brilliant weekend of trail running, fun and exploration in the beautiful Black Mountains and Herefordshire borderlands. You will be staying at Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre (www.longtownoutdoorlearning.co.uk) which will provide a comfortable, welcoming base for the weekend and fantastic running routes from right outside the door. One of the unique features of the weekend is the opportunity for cross training with a difference!
Please note that the event package shown is the package including accommodation. If you wish to attend the course without accommodation or wish to camp please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for the revised price.
The weekend will be led by Mike Fawcett, Head of Centre and passionate trail runner, race organiser and Mountain Leader. Mike’s knowledge of the local trails in all weathers and by day and night means that the weekend will offer a fantastic mix of trails and terrain to suit all abilities.
The course will assemble on Friday evening allowing for travelling and eating time en-route. After welcomes and a course introduction the first run will be a night run (head torches will be provided if you don’t have them) and will be an exciting but gentle introduction to the joys of running off-road with the added spice of running at night. After the run there will be the chance to grab a shower in the centre’s fantastic new shower block before a walk down the road to the local hostelry to sample the local hospitality and reflect on the first evening’s run.
After breakfast on Saturday, there will be an introductory session on maps and navigation which is the key to unlocking the enjoyment of the moors, hills, fells and mountains. Over coffee we will discuss appropriate clothing / footwear and equipment for hill / fell running and will then prepare for a longer trail run in the beautiful Black Mountains. The route will take in the stunning the Hatterrall Ridge that forms the border between England and Wales and some of the best terrain on both sides of the border. Please note that this course is designed as an introduction to trail running for those who haven’t ventured off-road / into the hills before. This means that we will run as a group for safety and mutual support and whilst there will be opportunities for everyone to extend themselves, the group pace will be set to match all abilities. After returning to the centre for a shower and late lunch you will then have the opportunity to try one of the Cross-Training options – Stand Up Paddleboarding (Britain’s fastest growing water sport), High Ropes (on our recently completed new course) or the ever popular Rock Climbing on the centre’s outdoor Climbing Wall. We are confident that you will finish the day feeling tired, happy and ready to enjoy some time chilling before a proposed evening meal at the local pub.
On Sunday we will be driving a short distance in the centre minibus to the stunning Olchon Valley to develop our navigation skills on the centre’s Olchon navigation course before completing a memorable run along the amazing Cat’s Back ridge. This fantastic run will be one of the highlights of the weekend and will leave you wanting to run more and more trails.
After a final shower the weekend will conclude by 1 pm.
