Physical Preparation for Triathlon Coaches

This online webinar series is designed for coaches to gain an understanding of the underlying principles behind physical preparation and how they relate to triathlon.  This 4 part series is led by Finlay MacHugh of Athlete Focused and will give coaches the tools to effectively programme and coach fundamental physical preparation training.  You will gain insights into how to adapt session content for specific athlete requirements.

Session Details

This course is made up of:

  • 4 x 60-minute webinars over 4 weeks.
  • Small homework assignments. 

Part 1: Monday 29th April

Part 2: Tuesday 7th May

Part 3: Wednesday 15th May 

Part 4: Thursday 23rd May 

Time: 6.30pm – 7.30pm (online login from 6pm)

Session Content 

Part 1: Part One will focus on the key principles behind strength and power development and how they apply to triathlon.  You will begin with key terminology before differentiating between key training systems and fundamental movements. 

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Differentiate between Strength and Power training systems
  • Understand the fundamental physiology behind strength development
  • Understand fundamental movements
  • List key components of session structure

 

Part 2: Moving on from fundamental movements, part 2 breaks down the key phases of running gait and the muscles involved.  You will develop a deeper understanding of posture and its relation to performance.  The second half of the session will work through key resistance exercises that relate to the running gait and the coaching points behind them.

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Name key phases in straight line running
  • Explain the importance of strength development for running
  • Demonstrate key coaching points behind key strengthening exercises

 

Part 3: Breaks down the key phases of Cycling and the musculature involved.  The second half of the session will work through key resistance exercises that relate to cycling and the coaching points behind them.

By the end of the session you should be able to:

  • Name key phases in cycling and musculature involved
  • Explain the importance of strength development for cycling
  • Demonstrate key coaching points behind key strengthening exercises

 

Part 4: Breaks down the key phases of swimming and the musculature involved.  The second half of the session will work through key resistance exercises that relate to the swimming and the coaching points behind them.

By the end of the webinar you should be able to:

  • Understand key phases in swimming stroke and musculature involved
  • Explain the importance of strength development for running
  • Demonstrate key coaching points behind key strengthening exercises
