The Monument Mile Classic 2
24 May 2019
You can’t flirt with the track. You must marry it.
I see you stand like greyhounds in slips,
Straining upon the start.
(King Henry in Henry V)
Do you yearn for the days when athletes ran 1,609.344 metres instead of 1,500 metres?
Do you yearn for the chance to run a track distance that two British Athletes, during the course of 1981, exchanged the World Record for three times in the space of nine days?
Do you think that the #milestillmatters ?
Following the success of the inaugural Monument Mile Classic in June 2018, Central Athletic Club, in partnership with the Scotland’s University of Sporting Excellence, The University of Stirling, are delighted to invite entries for the second annual Monument Mile Classic on 24 May 2019.
This year we change the race evening from a Wednesday to a Friday, and so on our Friday 24 May, we will be hosting our series of open graded track mile races set in the shadow of the iconic Wallace Monument, and against the backdrop of the stunning Stirling University campus.
Our inaugural event last year saw a staggering 83 of our 91 competitors run a PB in the mile, and we were delighted to host GB athletes Mhairi Maclennan and Ben Greenwood who were ultimate victors in the electric female and male elite races (4:54 and 4:10 respectively).
Both members of the public, and Scottish Athletics members, are invited to enter to run the track distance that made legends of Paavo Nurmi (4:10.4), Sebastian Coe (3:47.33), Steve Ovett (3:48.40), Hicham El Guerrouj (3:43.13) and Roger Bannister (3:58.8).
This event is a Scottish Athletics Licensed event, and all times recorded will be official, and added to Power of 10 athlete profiles.
In the event of some tight finishes, we will also be employing photo finish technology.
Places are limited, so do not turn down this opportunity to run this rarely-run legendary distance, and enter now.
