This brand new, exciting 6 mile trail race starts and finishes at Alderbank in the Penicuik Estate. The route is on trail paths through woods and fields, all paths are uneven with trip hazards at every step. The race starts with a climb up South Bank Woods and along the ridge before reaching the heights of Ravensneuk Castle (remains) where you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Estate and the Pentland Hills.
You will then have a nice downhill with Hare Burn down below leading to the Low pond and open meadow before climbing up and under the Chinese bridge past the Water Willie Fountain and Well to the preserved ruin of Penicuik House.
The route then flattens out a bit as you run in front of the house and along to the bridge where you then climb up towards the Timpenay Gate with the the Knight's Law Tower on your right. The route then takes you left into the field and along past the Lost Garden before turning right up to the highest section in the race at the halfway point between two cottages. You will then follow a beautiful woodland trails before coming out at the Timpenay Gate car park (where there will be a water station) and then turning onto the Tower Path and through another section of wood. At the end of this section you will cross the driveway and then head down a steep tricky rocky descent back down to the River North Esk.
When reaching the river you will turn right keeping the river on your left and run along to the restored 280 year old Roman Bridge which you cross over. Once over the bridge you then take on the famous 'bridge climb' which is short and steep, at the top take a left and back the way you came for the final mile which is a fast downhill with excellent views of Penicuik and beyond.
The route is fully signed and marshalled, navigation is not necessary. All paths remain open to the public and although signage will warn them of the race taking place, you must be vigilant.
