Race Cancellation

Dear Compton Bassett 5 runner,

We at Calne Running Club hope this notification finds you safe and well.

Please find below important, and unfortunate, information relating to the 2020 Compton Basset 5 mile race.

Cancellation of the Compton Bassett 5 mile race

It may come as no surprise that we are now ready to announce the cancellation of the 2020 Compton Bassett 5.

Why make this announcement now? As many of you are aware, initially we had planned to hold this event on 31 May and subsequently on 23 August. Whilst England Athletics have now announced, in accordance with new government guidance, some easing of the ‘lockdown restrictions’ that our sport needs to tackle, it remains unclear how road racing can safely proceed. Further to this, we feel that it would be irresponsible to consider holding the event. This is for a number of reasons but primarily focuses on the safety of runners, marshals and of course those who live in and around the route itself. It is also unlikely that we will be able to respond in time to the measures needed to safely organise an event in a new climate, if and when this occurs.

We do not wish to leave you, our runners, with the uncertainty for any longer as we approach 1 month until ‘race day’. We can only apologise if this seems like late notice for an inevitable decision.  However, we felt it prudent to wait until more certainty could be cast over the event, especially given the limited numbers that local events attract in the context of larger, national events.

What happens to my entry fee?

Calne Running Club has always held close to its heart the need to keep entry costs low while putting on a great show. That being said, event costs still occur and the club are in the unfortunate position of now carrying full event costs with no income due to the timing of event preparation occurring prior to any lockdown measures being anticipated.

That being said, our club will live to fight another day and will focus on making next year’s events a success. Many charities, however, may not be in the same situation. The lack of racing this year and associated fundraising will leave a large hole in many charities’ finances. With this in mind, we would like to propose that 100% of all entry fees received goes directly to charity.

We propose that the charity in receipt of this money is the mental health charity, mind. Why them? Many of us have been impacted first hand by the multitude of impacts mental health can have upon our lives, with the COVID-19 pandemic only adding to this. We had planned to organise the cake stall at the race in aid of Mind but this is clearly no longer possible. I hope you agree that this would be a worthy charity as we continue to tackle the multitude of effects this pandemic is causing.

How much will this be? Currently we have received 101 entries totalling £1252. The proposition will be that every penny of this goes directly to Mind.

If any runner is particularly averse to this suggestion, then please contact us prior to Friday 31st July 2020. After this date, we will set the wheels in motion to donate the money to this charity.

For now, it’s goodbye from us.  See you next year!

We know this is a real tough time but rest assured, we will be back in 2021 (all being safe to do so!).

For now, we at Calne Running Club would like to wish you all the best of health and we’ll be seeing you around soon.

All the best,

Denise & Simon

The Route

Setting off circa 250m beyond the Compton Bassett Benson Hall (SN11 8RQ), the route is flat! The first section of the route will see you run out on the minor C15. Compton Basset road towards Highway. At circa 0.8 miles you will leave this road and turn right to begin the next section of the route: the 'Highway Loop'. This loop is a quiet unclassified country road that is, most importantly, nice and level to ensure that you settle into your rhythm for the next couple of miles. As you reach half distance you will rejoin the C15, Compton Bassett road, albeit further up than when you initially left it. The route then continues along this road, turning left again at circa 3.2 miles to contnue along this road until at just over 4 miles where you will bear right to remain on the road that you left earlier to begin the final mile towards the finish which is back at the Benson Hall.

We, at Calne Running Club, hope you enjoy this route.  It has been carefully planned to lead on from our ever successful Heddington 5k series and will help ensure that fast, flat and enjoyable races are in your diary.

The race has an UKA race permit and a certificate of course accuracy, together with suitable medical cover and plenty of water at the finish. Courtesy of the UKA race permit, the results will appear on the Power of 10 / Run Britain rankings.

As with our other races, chip timing is courtesy of LPS Events.
