Dymock Half Marathon and 10K
24 May 2020
Welcome to the 30th Dymock Half Marathon, and new for 2020 the Dymock 10K. Our annual event runs through the rolling countryside of the Gloucestershire Herefordshire borders.
Both courses runs through beautiful rural countryside. The Half is a road race, but mainly on very quiet lanes with only about 600 yards of B road. It would best be described as hilly/undulating and as such not one for a PB, although we are confident a new course record could be set this year and there will be a prize for a course record. The 10K course follows the same first 2 miles as the Half, but with this run you get some beautiful woodland running to spice it up.
Both events start off from Dymock Cricket Club, with the 10K starting 20 minutes earlier, we swing South out of the village through small country lanes, where the Half crosses the M50 for the first time at Four Oaks, the 10K at this points turns right towards Dymock Woods. A quick detour for the Half around Holder's lane deposits us on the Kempley road heading North into Queen's Wood (the epicentre of the famous Daffodil Walk) and into the pretty village of Kempley. Once through Kempley, turning at Kempley New Church, the route tends North on a gradual incline towards Much Marcle, before doubling back past Kempley Old Church and the historic Memorial Oak (location of the last drinks station for the half) before returning to Candle Cottage on the edge of Kempley prior to veering back Eastward for the final few miles back to Dymock and over the old railway bridge. For the 10K, following the right turn just before the Motorway bridge, you need to loop (Only Once) Dymock Woods, you continue on the lane through towards Norman's Land towards Dymock, once back to Dymock back over the old railway bridge, both races then go past the Beauchamps Arms and sprint to a finish at Dymock’s Cricket club to receive your well-earned medal and limited edition technical T shirt.
This is the 30th!! half Matathan event and our 1st 10k; but who’s really counting? You know rural Gloucestershire, it’s not as though time is too pressing. The relaxed atmosphere adds to the charm of the event. We certainly started in ’87 (at least we think that’s what John, the founder would tell you) but there’s been the odd gap and missed year. However, like all good traditions you can’t put down a cannon-started, sociably competitive, BAA recognised event that has dominated the village's late Spring Bank Holiday for decades!
Parking is in the field at the back of the cricket club and additional parking opposite the Beauchamp Arms public house in the field, there will also be disabled parking at the Cricket Club. There will be refreshments available for runners and spectators.
