Organiser's Description

Craggy Island Triathlon 2021

Craggy's back!. Yay!. One of Scotlands most popular, and probably most unique triathlons is back for 2021. It usually sells out VERY quickly, so (a) only enter if you intend to race, and (b) stand-by your refresh button!. Entries will open at 7pm (UK) on Thursday 1st April.

Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd October 2021

There will be three seperate races in 2021. Make sure you enter the right one!;

Sat 2nd October - Start approx 1100hrs - Craggy Island Triathlon Day 1 (550m Swim, 14km MTB, 8km Hill Run).

Sun 3rd October - Start approx 1100hrs - Craggy Island Triathlon Day 2 (550m Swim, 14km MTB, 8km Hill Run)

There is no difference between these (Day 1/Day 2) races. Same course, same everything.

Sun 3rd October - TriStars 2/3 & Youth Start (approx 1200hrs) - Craggy Island Kids (150m Swim, 6km MTB, 2km Hill Run)

DESCRIPTION The award winning Craggy Island Triathlon takes place on the incredible unspoilt Hebridean island of Kerrera, off Scotland's stunning West coast, and close to the bustling town of Oban. Unique in the UK and possibly the World, the race starts on the mainland, and you'll be swimming to the island for the rest of the race!. Yep, you read that right.... Swim from the Mainland to an Island!. If that doesn't catch your imagination, we're not sure what will. Both the Bike and Run sections are entirely off-road (there literally are not any roads on the island!).

The event is a fundraiser for the Oban Mountain Rescue Team (approx. £5 from each entry is donated to them), and the Kerrera School House Community project (£1 from each entry is donated - the project aims to restore the islands' old schoolhouse to become a community hub).

Craggy Island Triathlon is brought to you by the team behind Durty Events (www.durtyevents.com).

Your entry fee gets you the race, T-Shirt, plus the ferry to the island. We'd be more than happy to see Solo racers, and also Relay Teams of 3 people (one does the Swim, one the Bike, and one the Run). Spectators will need to pay the ferry fare as normal (see https://www.calmac.co.uk/destinations/kerrera for details, including loads of stuff about the Island).

REGISTRATION Exact time TBC and may be different for each day (tide dependent!) on the Island. Assume that registration will open c. 0830-1030) - keep your eyes posted on the event website for the up to date timings and schedule. Your ferry ticket to the island to take your bike, run and post-race gear across and set-up transition is included in the entry fee. Collect your race number, swim cap, any final details etc. Bikes/Run gear must be on the island and be racked before the Race Briefing.

BRIEFING Attendance is compulsary (For Relay teams your swimmer must be present). Will be held at the swim start (mainland) immediately prior to racing.

RULES Normal Triathlon Scotland rules will apply – see www.triathlonscotland.org for further details. We're also REALLY heavy on littering anywhere on the course or car park. Please comply as we depend on the goodwill of our landowner hosts. If you're spotted littering, this is an instant DQ offence - you've been warned!.

START Time TBC from Gallanach Ferry Slip on the Mainland. Precise times to be confirmed in the pre-race briefing (this will be emailed to you approx 10 days before the race), and at Registration, and are dependent on tides - likely to be  approx. 1100hrs (Sat 2nd), and 1100hrs (Sun 3rd). In the event of poor water conditions, the organisers reserve the right to alter the swim course, or abandon it in favour of a Duathlon event. In the event of it being really bad (!), we may need to cancel, or hold a Duathlon on the mainland.

FORMAT 550m Open Water Sea Swim from the mainland ferry slip across the Sound of Kerrera to the ferry slip on the island - unique in the UK, if not the world!. Deep water start. Transition 1 and 2 are in the same location at the top of the island ferry slip.

14km Off-Road Mountain Bike. This will be on a combination of tracks, paths and rolling grassy/rocky areas, and is a bit hilly (ahem!). There’s some technical stuff, but nothing really stupid – if you feel the need to walk a bit, no problem, we’d prefer you stay in one piece!

8km Off-Road Run. This is closer to a hill-race style than a dull cross-country! The route will take in a number of island landmarks, including the Trig Point on the 'summit' of the island - around 400' above sea level, the atmospheric ruins of Gylen Castle, and running through a cave!. You'll run back along the coast, and finish back at the slipway/transition area. Lots of the route is proper rough and boggy trackless open hillside. Nice. Except the nasty bits.

There will be catering at the finish area - also a fundraiser for the Oban MRT.

MARSHALLS If you fancy racing one day and then volunteering to help us on the other day get in touch with us (info@durtyevents.com) - we'll sort out some food and hopefully some goodies!, plus you'll have a great time - promise!.

ENTRY Enter early, we think this race will sell out judging from the interest we've received. Entries are NOT transferable without the permission of the organisers. You must bring ID to race registration to be checked.

Changes to entries can only be made by the organisers (this can only be done by emailing us please), and we will ask you to make a £5 donation to Oban Mountain Rescue Team in return. Please ensure you supply the complete and correct details when entering!.

CAR PARK Please Note: no campervans/motorhomes (vans under 6m/Transit van size are ok) are allowed in our car parks (including Puffin Dive Centre) - we just can't fit big vehicles in.
