Official race website

Welcome to the Cateran 55 Trail Race

This year we have extra value with an added 3 miles to the route!

58 miles/93 kilometers and 7450ft/2250m ascent. You have 15.5 hours to complete.

Race starts at 6.30am, Saturday 14th August 2021 and there is a limit of 100 places.

Hopefully you'll find all the info you need about the race on our website, but if not please feel free to email me.

This year's race will be held adjacent to the Dalmunzie Hotel, Spittal of Glenshee, registration is from 5am, race starts 6.30am and you have 15 hours 30mins to finish. It's a circular route, starting and finishing next to the Dalmunzie Hotel and approximately 90% off road - made up of forest tracks, rough tracks, bog, mud, heather and beautiful scenery in a spectacular rural setting. There's roughly 10%  tarmac which is mainly backroads where you might be (un)lucky to see a vehicle or two. The last few miles are a treat, climbing over the An Lairig pass with a steep tough run down to The Spittal of Glenshee then a wee mile and a half jog/sprint/sufferfest up the singletrack road to the finish and your well deserved baked tattie!

This year we will also have live tracking so your friends and family can follow your race.

Parking is available at the start with toilets, sorry no showers. You can camp in the field or stay in your camper for £10 for the weekend pay on the day. There is also Gulabin bunkhouse 1.5 miles down the road or the Dalmunzie hotel next to us.

Runners have 15.5 hours to complete the 58 mile race.

The route will be marked where I think runners may miss a post although if runners are unfamiliar with the route, the map mentioned in the map section on the right is the most accurate. Any deviation from the route may lead to disqualification.

Runners must pass through the checkpoints within the stated time limits, and must carry any items that the Race Director states may be needed for their safety.

You must check in & out with the marshall at each Checkpoint.

Any runner leaving Enochdhu after 20:00hrs may be 'paired up' with another.

This is a SAL permitted race under hill race rules, thus no walking sticks/poles or other aids are permitted.

The race has a drop bag service at 6 checkpoints and water will be provided. Runners are NOT permitted a support crew. If your family or friends want to see you in the race, the only checkpoints they should go to are Glenisla or Blairgowrie.

Cut offs for 58 mile runners are Blairgowrie by 2.30pm and Enochdu 8pm.

Any runner who in the opinion of any Race Marshall or Medic is regarded as unfit to continue will be withdrawn from the race. THEIR DECISION IS FINAL.

Running unsupported, please be sensible and carry the basic essentials! Yes I know you are a hardcore ultra runner but 55 miles is a long way and the weather may change. The last section is the most remote and the toughest bit. A waterproof jacket, headtorch and a food supply to keep you going between the drop bags please. The marshalls at the last checkpoint will check to make sure you are equipped and able for the last 6 mile slog over the big hill.

Be sensible and look out for the safety of your fellow runners too.

In bad weather all runners may have to 'Pair Up' at any stage at the discretion of the race director.
     COVID 19

We will be following the Covid guidelines for events as issued by Scottish Athletics who provide our permit and insurance. This might mean face coverings at the start, finish and checkpoints. We might also have to start the race in waves. It is likely that we will have to advise competitors not to bring any friends, family etc to spectate. We will advise competitors nearer race day so be prepared.

Rules may be added if and when circumstances arise -  it is for your own safety!

No refunds can be made on entries at this stage I'm afraid.

Space/foil blanket
Mobile phone switched on
Headtorch for runners expecting to go through Enochdhu after 7pm (sunset is 8.57pm)
Emergency food or energy drink

The race is under Scottish Athletics Rules and is a scottishathletics permit event.

Hope to see you all soon and happy running!

Richie Cunningham and all the lovely marshals.
