Cycle 4 Christ - David Catherwood Memorial Sportive 2017
David Catherwood was a highly valued member of the Cycle 4 Christ (C4C) Cycling Club. In July 2016, David was tragically killed in a cycling accident. In his memory, C4C are organising the inaugural "David Catherwood Memorial Sportive" in July 2017. The route will be 61 miles - one mile for each year of David's life and will raise funds for the CLIC Sargent cancer charity.
When: Saturday 22nd July 2017
Entry Fee: £25.00 - online pre-registration or enter on the day
Start/End point: Thriving Life Church, 18A Crawfordsburn Rd, Newtownards BT23 4EA
Refreshments will be available at the start and end of your cycle - all finishers will be presented with a 'goody bag' and a medal.
Route: 61 miles beginning at Thriving Life Church, Newtownards and following a picturesque route down the Ards Peninsula to Portaferry, where refreshments will be provided, before the return journey to Newtownards, taking in the stunning Strangford Lough coastline.

Sign on: opens at 8am and closes at 9.30am at the starting point at Thriving Life Church.
Start: There will be a mass ride-out at 9.30am which will include a tribute to David Catherwood.
All participants are encouraged to fundraise for CLIC Sargent and can use this link to download a sponsorship form. Everyone who raises over £50 in sponsorship will be entered into a prize draw.
1st Prize: Bike (provided by Decathlon)
2nd Prize: One night stay and breakfast for two people at the Culloden Hotel, Holywood
3rd Prize: A voucher for a meal for two at Harrisons of Greyabbey
(Please note: to be eligible for the prize draw, all sponsorship forms and money MUST be handed in at the event start BEFORE 9am on the morning of the Sportive - the draw will be made PRIOR to the event starting at 9.30am)
This is the inaugural running of the David Catherwood Memorial Sportive and we warmly invite you to attend. Why not bring a camera or smartphone and stop to take pictures of the beautiful scenery around Strangford Lough. If you do stop, please ensure you stop in a safe location - please do not cause an obstruction and always be aware of moving traffic. Obey The Highway Code at all times.
Important Event Information
Online pre-paid entry will close at midnight on 21st July 2017
Age: Entrants must be aged 18 or over to register for this event.
There is ample car parking at Thriving Life Church but if you are able to travel to the start line by bike, please do so.
Insurance for the sportive is included as part of the entry fee.
We strongly recommend that you wear a helmet with the buckle fastened at all times (except at lunch!). Although it is not law to wear a helmet, you only have one head...protect it! This is an event where HELMETS MUST BE WORN.
Bike and Maintenance
You must ensure your bike/equipment is in good mechanical condition and not a risk to you or anyone else. Check brakes. Check wheels & tyres. Check you have the correct tyre pressure. Know how to fix a puncture. Carry spare tubes, pump & carry your phone.
We recommend you bring/carry the following with you: personal ID, a list of any allergies you have, and a list of all medication you are currently taking (very important), pump, spare inner-tube or puncture repair kit, tyre levers, multi-tool, water bottle, packable rain coat (yes, it does rain in Northern Ireland) and a couple of plasters (just in case).
THIS IS NOT A RACE • ROADS ARE NOT CLOSED • OBEY THE HIGHWAY CODE AND ALL ROAD SIGNS & TRAFFIC LIGHTS • STOP AT ALL JUNCTIONS • WEAR YOUR HELMET • NO MORE THAN 2 ABREAST AND SINGLE FILE IF A QUEUE OF TRAFFIC IS BEHIND YOU • GIVE LOADS OF ROOM TO INEXPERIENCED CYCLISTS • DO NOT OVERTAKE THROUGH TOWNS AND VILLAGES • ALLOW OVERTAKING CARS TO PULL IN • WARN OTHER CYCLISTS OF APPROACHING HAZARDS • ALLOW LOTS OF BRAKING ROOM BETWEEN YOU AND BIKE IN FRONT • BE POLITE AND COURTEOUS AT ALL TIMES
Remember, you are representing the Cycle 4 Christ club and the cycling community as a whole...please act accordingly.
A light lunch will be available at Portaferry from 11am until 2pm...if you arrive after 2pm we cannot guarantee that there will be anything left!
Refreshments will be available at the end of your cycle from 1pm until 4pm
