Craggy Island Triathlon - Day 2 (Sun 1st Sept) Tweet
Winner of Triathlon Scotland 'Most Enjoyable Event of the Year' 2011.
CRAGGY ISLAND TRIATHLON (DAY 2) - SUNDAY 1st September
550m Swim 14km Mountain Bike (1 Lap) 8km Hill Run
Craggy Island Triathlon was completely sold-out again last year, several months before race day - if you want a slot, don't hang around!. If the race fills, we'll open a waiting list, and allocate places in strict order of the date an entrant joined the waiting list.
There will actually be three seperate races in 2013. Make sure you enter the right one!;
Sat 31st August - Wave Start 1 (approx 1500hrs) - 2013 Scottish Cross Triathlon Championships and Scott X-Tri Series Race (550m Swim, 28km MTB, 8km Hill Run)
Sat 31st August - Wave Start 2 (approx 1500hrs) - Craggy Island Triathlon Day 1 (550m Swim, 14km MTB, 8km Hill Run)
Sun 1st September (**YOU ARE ON THE ENTRY FORM FOR THIS RACE**) - Wave Start 1 (approx 1100hrs) - Craggy Island Triathlon Day 2 (550m Swim, 14km MTB, 8km Hill Run)
DESCRIPTION The award winning Craggy Island Triathlon takes place on the incredible unspoilt island of Kerrera, off Scotland's stunning West coast, and close to the bustling town of Oban. Unique in the UK and possibly the World, the race starts on the mainland, and you'll be swimming to the island for the rest of the race!. Yep, you read that right.... Swim from the Mainland to an Island!. If that doesn't catch your imagination, we're not sure what will. Both the Bike and Run sections are entirely off-road (there literally are no any roads on the island!).
The event is a fundraiser for the Oban Mountain Rescue Team, and is brought to you by the team behind the infamous Durty Triathlon (www.durtyevents.com).
Your entry fee gets you the race and a goody bag (if budget allows we'll do a T-Shirt, but no promises on this - OK?), plus the ferry to the island. We'd be more than happy to see Solo racers, and also Relay Teams of 3 people (one does the Swim, one the Bike, and one the Run). Spectators will need to pay the ferry fare as normal (see www.kerrera-ferry.co.uk for details, including loads of stuff about the Island).
REGISTRATION Time TBC and different for each day (tide dependent!) on the Island - keep your eyes posted on the event website (www.craggyislandtriathlon.com) for the up to date timings and schedule. Your ferry ticket to the island to take your bike, run and post-race gear across and set-up transition is included in the entry fee. Collect your race number, swim cap, any final details etc. Bikes/Run gear must be on the island and be racked before the Race Briefing.
BRIEFING Attendance is compulsary. Will be held at the swim start (mainland) immediately prior to racing. Time TBC, but approx 1445hrs (Sat 31st), 1045hrs (Sun 1st).
RULES Normal Triathlon Scotland rules will apply – see www.triathlonscotland.org for further details. We're also REALLY heavy on littering anywhere on the course or car park. Please comply as we depend on the goodwill of our landowner hosts. If you're spotted, this is an instant DQ offence - you've been warned!.
START Time TBC from Gallanach Ferry Slip on the Mainland. Precise times to be confirmed in the pre-race briefing (this will be emailed to you approx 10 days before the race), and at Registration, and are dependent on tides - likely to be approx. 1500hrs (Sat 31st Aug), and 1100hrs (Sun 1st Sept). In the event of poor water conditions, the organisers reserve the right to alter the swim course, or abandon it in favour of a Duathlon event. In the event of it being really bad (!), we may need to cancel, or hold a Duathlon on the mainland.
FORMAT 550m Open Water Sea Swim from the mainland ferry slip across the Sound of Kerrera to the ferry slip on the island - unique in the UK, if not the world!. Deep water start. Transition 1 and 2 are in the same location at the top of the island ferry slip.
14km Off-Road Mountain Bike. This will be on a combination of tracks, paths and rolling grassy/rocky areas, and is a bit hilly (ahem!). There’s some technical stuff, but nothing really stupid – if you feel the need to walk a bit, no problem, we’d prefer you stay in one piece!.
8km Off-Road Run. This is closer to a hill-race style than a dull cross-country! The route will take in a number of island landmarks, including the Trig Point on the 'summit' of the island - around 400' above sea level, and the atmospheric ruins of Gylen Castle. You'll run back along the coast, and finish back at the slipway/transition area. Lots of the route is proper rough and boggy trackless open hillside. Nice. Except the nasty bits.
There will be catering (by the lovely folks from Lower Gylen Tea Rooms) at the finish area.
MARSHALLSIf you fancy racing one day and then volunteering to help us on the other day get in touch with us (paul@durtyevents.com) - we'll sort out an entry discount, or some goodies!, plus you'll have a great time - promise!.
ENTRY Closing Date for Entries – 23rd August 2013. Our advice?...... Enter early, we think this race will sell out judging from the interest we've received. If you miss the deadline, contact us by email and we'll see what we can sort out, but no promises - OK?
REFUNDSIf the event is cancelled due to circumstances out of the organisers control then no refunds will be offered. This includes situations such as adverse weather conditions or major incidents. If the event is cancelled due to circumstances within the organisers control then entrants will be offered a 50% refund. Entrants must apply in writing (via email) to claim their refund. No refunds will be granted after one month has passed from the event date. Entrants wishing to withdraw must inform the organiser by email. Entry fees will be refunded as follows; up to 1st July 75% refund (less any Entry Central fees), up to 9th August 50% refund (less any Entry Central fees). After 9th August - no refund. Entries are not transferable.
