Chariots of Fire 5km beach raceTweet
Celebrating 5 years in 2015, Sunday 31st May 2015 sees the return of Chariots on the silver sands of St Andrews. Come back and join us for a fun day on the beach, celebrating St Andrews' cinematic past. Chariots 2015 once again gives you the chance to run resplendent all in white on the very same beach that featured in the film Chariots of Fire, and so memorably with Rowan Atkinson as Mr Bean at the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, complete with the memorable soundtrack that we've all played in our heads at one point or another...
An official partner of Homecoming 2014 last year, 2015 marks our 5 year anniversary and we’d be delighted for you to come and celebrate with us! Last year we had a couple visit from Hawai’i and the race is starting to gain a global reputation.
If you’re reading this, slightly bemused, check out these links and start dreaming of running barefoot through the surf.
And the original scene from the 1981 film that started this all off:
The race is a simple out and back 5km. Runners do not have to be barefoot but are welcome to run through the waves should they wish (it may affect the time though!).
The children's 1 mile fun run (under 11s only) race is scheduled to start at 11am (subject to the tides!), hoping to get the main 5km off promptly at 11.30am. Prizegiving 12.15pm.
Plentiful free parking behind the sand dunes.
The event welcomes everybody, from the club runner looking for a Sunday shakedown, the parkrunner looking for a unique and individual event, the first time runner looking to try the sport for the first time, or just somebody wanting to relive Vangelis and run in an unique race in a very special location. You're welcome to sprint your heart out for glory, although some may find the urge to run in a slow-motion Vangelis-induced stupor may make setting a PB somewhat challenging.
We are very well-supported by the local businesses and so you will be some of the best rewarded 5km runners known to man - the past three years every adult finishing has received a free beer, alongside sticks of rock and medals etc.
Entry is £12 (£2 discount if you are a registered member of Scottish Athletics) and after card fees etc, all proceeds will go to Worldwide Cancer Research, our charity partner for this year's event.
1 mile children's fun run for under 11s, entry (£tbc) on the day and an ice cream at the end.
As this is a charity event, all proceeds after costs go to our selected charity partner, raising on average £2500 each race and this year we hope that this figure doubles.
YOU'VE SEEN THE FILM, RUN THE RACE, NOW BUY THE T SHIRT...
We have exclusive race tee shirts available to buy so you can really look the part as you stride down the sand through the surf. With both men's and women's sizes available there is no excuse for you not to. Our partners at 4Distance have produced a replica cotton tee of the shirt worn by athletes at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games, complete with grandad collar and embroidered Union flag which we are very excited about, alongside a standard white tech running tee. These can be ordered and paid for when entering and will be available for collection at registration on the day of the race from the admin centre/race hamlet.
NEW THIS YEAR - WE NOW ALSO OFFER AN ADDITIONAL OPTION 1924 COTTON TEE BEARING THE SCOTTISH SALTIRE IN PLACE OF THE UNION FLAG. JUST MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE CORRET OPTION WHEN ENTERING - MENS' AND WOMENS' SIZES AVAILABLE
*****TO CELEBRATE THE 5TH YEAR OF THE RACE, THIS YEAR'S COTTON TEES CARRY A LAUREL WREATH DETAIL ON THE RIGHT SLEEVE TOGETHER WITH A ROMAN NUMERAL V*****
Sizes start from XS in Female and S in Male - sizing details are available on the entry form ahead of ordering - either tee shirt is available to order and pick up on race day.
In due course a full list of things to do, suggested weekend activities and other will appear on our Facebook page etc. Similarly, all relevant information is included with the entry receipt you will receive upon payment.
Chariots 5km charity beach run
Chariots 2015 must be one of the most scenic and iconic races in the UK, and the West Sands, where the race is run, has now been brought to the attention of a global audience following Mr Bean’s appearance in the London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony of 2012. The race starts and finishes on West Sands, at the town end with the “race village/hamlet” adjacent to the Sea Shell beach cafe. The route itself is pretty much flat, out and back and run entirely on sand and in surf and runners start and finish to the strains of Vangelis, just as the runners do in the film that inspires the race – Chariots of Fire.
Please note that on-line entries close on Friday 30th May. We will still accept late entries on the day of the race at the registration point (but there is an additional charge of £1 to do this). Anybody wishing to purchase an event tee whilst entering must ensure they make their entry by 01 May.
Start & Finish location
The start and finish will be from the near end of West Sands and will be clearly marked. Marshals will be on hand to direct anybody unsure as to the exact location. Runners will run out along the beach for 2.5km before turning and sprinting for the finish (a piper will be at the turn.) Runners and supporters congregate near the beach café, close to the council toilets where on the day registration will take place
There are no changing facilities here although the council run toilet block is close by and competitors will be able to park their cars on the grass verges close by.
The course, being a simple out and back, has minimal marking/marshalling, but the turn (further than you might think!) is clearly marked and very obvious.
Once again we will be staging a Children's fun run of 1 mile, scheduled to start at 11am. Entry fees are tbc on the morning and are restricted to the under 11s. Adults are welcome to accompany their child although this doesn't automatically entitle you to their ice cream!
Following the success last year of running registration across 2 days, we will again offer registration on Saturday in addition to the Sunday morning and would encourage as many as possible to register in advance to ensure a less fraught Sunday. Full details on where this will be held will appear in due course. Each runner must register with the organisers before the race where they will also receive their race number - please affix this to the front of your running top with the safety pins provided.
On the day of the race itself, registration will take place on the morning of the race, at the race hamlet next to the beach café. Registration will run from 0930am. Whilst there may be spaces available on the day we strongly advise pre-entry to save time on the day and ensure you get your place.
Those who have pre-ordered a limited edition commemorative white t shirt will be able to collect their shirt (and run in it) at registration. There will be a STRICTLY LIMITED number of t shirts available to purchase on the day for those who wish to. However, these will be sold on a first come, first served basis and quantities and sizes are strictly limited. To ensure you receive a shirt, be sure to enter and preorder by 01 May or face missing the deadline.
Start/Finish (these times are still provisional although we do not anticipate much change)
The start/finish line will be clearly defined at the town end of West Sands. The race will start at 11.30am prompt (Fun Run 11am), please be at the start area in good time.
No water stations – it is a 5km after all! All over 18 finishers will receive a bottle of locally-brewed beer. Please respect local byelaws and don’t crack them open outside. We hope to have more refreshments available and the Sea Shell beach café as ever would be glad of your custom.
Please proceed with caution
Please run clockwise to avoid running into incoming competitors at the turn. Once clear, take the most direct route down the beach – even run barefoot through the surf if you choose. All runners must wear their race number on the front of their vest. Please use four safety pins (spare pins available at registration) to assist in identification of number at the finish line.
We are indebted to the expertise of Fife AC in their help in organizing and processing the results. They train on this beach every Thursday in the summer months, the lucky buggers – why not join them?! Click here for more details about joining Fife AC.
All white – no one will stop you running if you don’t…but it’s much more fun…and makes for better photos if you run clad in all white. Also saves a lot of time retouching photos later on!
There is ample free parking next to the beach on the grass verges. Marshals will be on hand to direct you if required.
Charity and other
All proceeds after essential costs will go to WCR. The prizes, post race goodies and all services have been supplied free of charge by many local businesses and we are incredibly grateful to them for their support.
There will be a presentation for the top three male/female in both5km and Children's race and we aim to have this no later than 12.15 at the race hamlet. We hope to have some local live music to keep you entertained as you wait with bated breath. You lucky, lucky people…
Hope that has answered most questions – contact details should be readily available elsewhere on this website.
And that, my fellow Charioteers, is that! Train hard, but remember to go out and enjoy yourselves first and foremost.
We can't wait for you to join us all down on the sand on 31st May, "...with hope in your hearts, and wings on your heels..."
